I'm picking up a Hobart Handler 210 tonight and need to pick of some cable to plug it so I can move it around the shop. I want about a 50 foot cord if that's ok. In the Hobart manual it says :-Min Input Conductor Size In AWG 14 (see note below)-Max Recommended Input Conductor Length In Feet (Meters) 55 (17)-Min Grounding Conductor Size In AWG 14Note - Conductor data in this section specifies conductor size (excluding flexible cord or cable) between the panelboard and the equipment per NEC Table310.16. If a flexible cord or cable is used, minimum conductor size may increase. See NEC Table 400.5(A) for flexible cord and cable requirements.I'm not the best with electrical so I'm hoping someone can tell me what size cable to get that will work safely
Reply:We need ti know what the amp draw is at 230 v?Somthing like 40 amps maybe?
Reply:Input Amperes At Rated Output 24^Is that it?I looked at the breaker here in our shop and it says 30a. Is this enough?Last edited by DaveJeep; 12-23-2009 at 05:12 PM.
Reply:The plug I have here in the shop is a Hubbell Twist Lock 30A 250 Volt (L6-30P). So can I put the male end to plug into that and the female end for the welder to plug into? I'm not sure what wires go where on the twist lock plug.Last edited by DaveJeep; 12-23-2009 at 05:53 PM.

Reply:I'm assuming the L6-30 is in the wall- That will make it a L6-30R (receptacle)I wouldn't be afraid to cut off the Plug on the HH210 (6-50p) and replace it with a L6-30PYou can buy SJO 10/3 Cord by the foot at Home Depot and they will have the L6-30 Connectors. They make a better connection for Home made extension cords since ya can't really get a hold of Molded 6-50 connectors easily.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:10/3 will be good for this 210 amp machine. The 10/3 Cord by the foot is probably about $1.80/ft.You may even find an L6-30 extension cord for a reasonable price. You can also shop Electrical supply shops for the cord by the foot as well as a Pre made extension cord.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:983 makes a good point but I believe Hobart allows for the Plug to be Changed- Good Company regarding warranty work.Even so you can make the extension cord with a twist lock to match the wall and a 6-50 to match the HH210If that Receptacle isn't used for anything elese the receptacle can be swapped out easily for a 6-50rEd Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
