A previous post got the wheels turning in my head. I have a small project that about 1/4 of the way through I realized I hadn't wiped the oil off the metal (most of it is 1/4 cold roll). I was working outside and I was going to wipe the metal down as I used it so it wouldn't rust before I got to it.........anyway I had a brainfart and left it on till finished..........Now I need to get the oil off before paint, and well since it's got about 200' of cold roll in various shapes it will be a pain to wipe down with acetone......So what if I used a weed burner to burn the oil off? Would that work or am I stuck wiping it down?
Reply:I doubt that it'll work..... won't get it hot enough and would leave burned on crud if it did. Of course you could try it on a small area and see what happens.HH 187Miller Bluestar1EAHP AlphaTig 200X
Reply:Did you ever use one of those before? It puts out a flame like an afterburner. You could catch something on fire if you are not careful.
Reply:I wouldn't use a weed burner. you run the chance of turning you project into a pretzel. not really, but it will warp and twist some from the heat.use dawn dish soap and wash the oil off. after it is dry, etch it with phosphoric acid and prime it.
Reply:well i think it would nt work or either may have a chance of holding fire ...... so better let it cool down for a while .......:P :Psteel bar steel supplier
Reply:if you want everything to warp it should work greatHave we all gone mad?
Reply:Simple Green and a power washer....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Wont warp unless you turn it a dull red. Come on guys. It dont change size till red.

Reply:Last time (and all the times before) I had to do this it was the el cheapo paint thinner from Wally World, and a big package of paper towels.I use a small bucket and brush the thinner on with a throwaway chip brush. Then wipe it down with paper towels. And ya want to remember to smoke while doing thisI wish I had a power washer, better yet a Hotsy, but it ain't in the budget for the small amount of work I do.Did the 8 corral panels this way and it turned out ok, and was relatively fast. 60 feet of tubing on each panel x 8 panels = 480 linear feetI'm not sure, but wouldn't you still have to use a solvent to clean before painting regardless of whether you used a power washer? Dunno, never used one."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I would use my engine cleaning air gun with a degreaser and brush first then clean with acetone, then prime. Darrell

Reply:Good laquer thinner from autobody stores works great. It will cut the oil faster then acetone or brake cleaner. You will use less paper towel and not a whole lot of solvent. Get a little plastic squeeze bottle safe for it and go nuts. Before painting though you should use a wax and grease remover as laquer thinner can leave a residue.Millermatic 252Lincoln 175 plusTA 185tswTA 161stlhypertherm pmax 45Victor torchHenrob torchAn S10 for each day of the week |
