Here is a set of doors we just finished and installed. Took a bit as the brickwork was so poorly done. Anyway they are in customer is very happy, even the local newspaper ran a story on our work.Simonhttp://members.optusnet.com.au/~abba/index.html Attached Images
Reply:Great work! Simple, clean, smooth. How do you design? Draw or computer or trial and error.
Reply:Very nice. Are the gates and doors powder coated ?
Reply:Impressed! How about filling us in on how you made all the fabrications. Your know the materials used and the machines that bent the materials. A Little insperation and knowledge goes a long way.ThanksDave
Reply:Tapwelder, I draw my designs first on paper if the customer likes it I then do a full size.Brett, Thank you the gates are sprayed first with a zinc rich primer than two coats of colour. Very hard to get in all the scroll work.Wizard, The materials I used were 20x8mm mild steel flat bar for the frame work, the scroll work was from 16x5mm flat bar bent mainly cold in a jig I made for the job, the flowers and leaves were cut from 3mm black sheet and shaped hot. I ran the MiG over the whole thing. Probably the longest part of the whole job was fitting the three locks to the doors it had two keyed Patio bolts on one door and a lock from a aluminum type security door on the other, it was the tricky part as it was made to fit into an extruded frame so I had to fab a box to accept the lock. Reply:wow thats a nice job..Did you make any money on the job?
Reply:Your good. I used to draw ornamental stuff. Takes a lot of time. I do more trial and error, now. I don't usually do stuff as elaborate as that. Painting Scrolls.Sometimes I mix a wet primer (lots of thinner) solution, then dip my scrolls and finnials. It works really well for cast iron parts. The wet solution really gets into the pores. I use primers that oppose the color, so I can see missed areas.Last edited by tapwelder; 05-20-2006 at 01:54 AM.
Reply:Hey Welder ROB, We did OK out of it I never seem to be able to charge for all the time I seem to put into a job like it, but I would not take on the job if I thought I would not come out in front.Tapwelder, I had never thought of your wet thinner idea but I will have to try it. It should soak right into the scroll work, Do you do large jobs in parts, weld together and redo the welds? I also use different colour primers or I would have no chance.Simonhttp://members.optusnet.com.au/~abba/index.html
Reply:Yeah, I do parts, then weld. Clean and repaint. I use a wet primer for all joints, too. You'll be suprised how well the cast part hold paint even after welding.
Reply:I will definitely give it a go, what ratio would you use? What sort of paint do you prefer?I thought about using 2pac on the doors but I had already made the fence and garden arch and painted them with quick dry enamel, so I stuck with the same.Simonhttp://members.optusnet.com.au/~abba/index.html
Reply:I use quick drying enamal, also. We have a local paint manufacturer called Warren Paints, they have been in business for about 100 years. Their prices are 1/2 major brand. Price my biggest motivation for using them. Only complaint, sometimes the quick dry paints dry too fast if brushing.Ratio is not critical, just watery enough to run into crack.Lately, I have been trying to have more stuff powder coated.Hey Welder ROB, We did OK out of it I never seem to be able to charge for all the time I seem to put into a job like it
Reply:thats some nice work from any angle..smooth..even...mirror images nice nicemrs zap does stained glass doors and such so i apreciatewhat it takes to do mirror images and do them good..well done mate!you deserve a fosters ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks ZapIt did take a little to get all the scroll work the same. The worst part was the brick arch was poorly built so the door where wider at the top and the top arc was different on both doors so it would fit.The job was 50K's (31 miles) from my workshop so I measured once and was very happy when they fitted.Zap you should start an off topic post and show us some of Mrs Zaps glass work.Simonhttp://members.optusnet.com.au/~abba/index.html
