I have a 50# box of 1/8" 7014 and it has gotten damp in storage, any way to dry this out and make it useful again?Or should I just throw it away?John
Reply:If you had a dry rod oven, I think you could dry them out. Although I am not 100% sure.
Reply:I was kind of thinking of putting them in the oven in the kicthen when the wife's out for the day.John
Reply:I guess it all depends how wet they got and what you will be using them for, With rods being so cheap I would toss them and get some fresh ones.
Reply:Not really wet, just kind of damp.I brought them in to a warm area from be out side in a shed, therefore they got damp from condensation.John

Reply:Here is one thread with some info on moisture in stick rods.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ghlight=rutileYou will likely be fine to dry out this rod in the oven.  I don't think you what to cook them out absolutely dry, apparently non-low hydrogen rods need some moisture to function properly.  You might try baking a few at a given temperature and time, then try them to see how they function.  Maybe you will determine what is too much drying versus not enough drying.  If they are too moist, the arc may be violent, and/or you may get porosilty.Let us know what you find.

Reply:Going to try a few and see what happens. How is the best way to store welding rods? I sure don't use them up fast enough to have fresh rods every time I weld.Does those plastic rod holders with a screw on cap keep them dry?John

Reply:I keep mine in blue rod holders. They hold about 10lbs each and have an O ring for a seal and it keep the flux from getting beat off them. They work great for what I do.

Reply:other than lohy, the original package should be ok.some rod, like red 6010, needs moisture.

Reply:John R - If you check the specs, I think you'll find that to properly restore some electrodes, -that is to bring them back to spec from a wet condition- takes a long hot bake-out. Usually a restore is beyond the reach of a rod oven designed only to maintain electrode.Good Luck
