Hi names Greg, just bought a used weld pac 100. have not welded in awhile. Starting a chopper project. The welder came with flux core wire. It has the right adapter in the back for a bottle. So I finally found a used bottle and had it filled with 25/75 mix.I switched the wiring around inside, hooked up the bottle and put in the other spool of welding wire. Im not having any luck with any penatration. Is there any way to make sure my welder has been changed over to gas? Should I be able to smell something?Like I said real new to this.I put the other end on the welder were the wire comes out.I'm not sure if it's the welder or me. Clean steel and good ground. it doesn't sound like bacon frying when i'm welding. if I could get some help or guidness I sure would appreciate it. Greg Attached Images
Reply:Did you purge the gun prior to welding with it?  Or make sure you had the gas turned on?Those two simple things can be overlooked when thinking about other stuff before you strike an arc.You shouldn't smell anything from the gas used.  You might be able to hear a hissing sound at the nozzle end with the trigger pressed.  If you hold a match to the end of the nozzle, if gas is present, it should go out.If those things don't work, you could look to make sure the gas solenoid is clicking when the trigger is pulled also.  It should click when opened.  If you have an owner's manual, it should have some kind of trouble shooting guide in it that will help diagnose the problem.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:You won't get the same penetration with 75/25 on that small machine that you get with FC wire. The settings to run gas wig and FC are different. Post up some picts of the welds. If you aren't getting gas it should be easy to tell from the look of the weld..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Did you buy this machine used?  correct me if im wrong but i dont think these were sold ready to use  gas.  you had to get a conversion kit #K-610 or you could convert this machine yourself and save a considerable amount of money.  anyhow when you pull the trigger there should be a noticable click.  it will click again when you turn it off.  this is the gas solenoid opening and closing.  there should be a steady hiss at the nozzle end and should be quite audible.  As far as the lack of the bacon frying sound that indicates to me a machine that isnt at its proper settings for the size material your welding.  the lack of penitration sounds to me like you got your heat to low and your wire to fast.If you are unsure of your machine being set up right for gas you can look at this post and it will give you a better idea of what should be there for a weld pak 100 set up for gashttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...hlight=diy+mig
