Hello,I am getting a problem with my wirefeed, it is occasionally getting stuck/kinked on the roller, also appears to be arcing off there but I cannot confirm that as I am not watching it when it happens.I initially was wondering if the roll of wire was defective and had the kinks in it but it doesn't appear so. It is a roll of wire I purchased with my machine from IOS.Could a worn/dirty tip cause this ?Machine is a MM180, .030 wire.
Reply:What size tip are you using?  A .030 or a .035?  With .030 wire it should have a .030 tip.  .035 tips will cause starts & stops. Is this a new machine?  (I assume it is if it came from IOS) Maybe there is a kink in the liner?Do you have the tension set correctly on the feed rollers?  Use the 2x4 method.  Run some wire out of the end, hold the gun pointed at the 2x4 & the rollers are adjusted so the wire feeds out & coils away from the 2x4.  With a stub end, it should slip if stabbed directly into the 2x4 (like your trying to nail the wood with the wire). Is the wire unrolling from the top of the spool or the bottom of the spool?  It should be unrolling from the bottom of the spool.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Any mig, the gun, liner, wire, is all electrically positive (assuming you are running DCEP).  The only way you would be getting arcing at the drive roll, somehow either the drive roll or tension roller is electrically negative.

Reply:Take the drive roll off and see if there has been any arcing on the back side next to the case.

Reply:changed the .030 tip and used it for a few hours this afternoon without any problems.
Reply:Sounds as if the wire is picking up the + side of the circuit thru the feed roll instead of the contact tip. I agree the .030 tip is better but you'd think you would still get a good connection even with an .035 tip. For it to arc against the drive roll there'd have to be no connection whatsoever to the contact tip which you'd think wouldn't be possable. This latest installment of 'Village Idiot' has been brought to you by the famous JohnnyWelder

Reply:I wonder is the problem is the spring on the tension roller is coming in contact with the brass fitting & allowing electricity to flow to ground when the wire sputters?I can't put arrows in, but the pic below, you can see the spring right above the brass end & the liner sticking out.........The .030 tip will keep the juice flowing the right direction though. Reply:on thursday, I kept having problems similar to such, but it would just force that through and would bugger up at the tip and cause a start/stop in the weld.or it would bugger up at the tip instead.Once and a while, the ground breaker would trip on my wire feeder (using a Lincoln Pulse Power 500 w/ some random lincoln wire feed).so after about 5-6 hours of this, and having to hit the reset every 2 hours or so... I got so frustrated I started to tear in to the feeder, and then I blew it out...when I blew it out, I saw a small piece of a pop tart wrapper come out. lol!I eat pop tarts for breakfast every morning at work, and the wrappers are foil... Which I store on top of my machine usually. (the top of that machine gets really warm, so it's like having them hot and ready whenever I want to eat them!)Turns out a tiny piece of it got inside my feeder and was messing me up all morning/afternoon.after I managed to get it out of there, ran problem free -.-
