todays project..machine heat weld heads in more tubes..heres the pile of heads..Attachment 4725this is what you do if the jaws on the 4 jaw chuck are too big to fit inside the heads so you can machine the face and O.D.Attachment 4726heres the machined tube..Attachment 4727tube welded..Attachment 4730close-up finish weld..Attachment 4729now i have to repete the process X8.. and a side note..if you get to do stuff like this its best to make every bore the same size.. that way there you can set "0" on the lathe dial and get all the heads tha same size (+.006) bigger than the bore and now you dont get anything mixed up..some guys just bore to any size.. then you have to make each head fit each bore..mark them a.b.c.d.e..whatever and hope you dont get head "a" in tube "p" if you get what i mean... i've seen them get because the marks came off the tube/head for some reason or another..usually another.....zap!Last edited by zapster; 12-27-2007 at 05:22 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Great Job Zap!You get so many fun jobs. I´m learning a lot from you bro Now....How big was the tube? Didn´t you burn yourself while welding that? Nice looking beads too My Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3 4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:pic#3 I.D. 7.050... no...no hands or fingers were burned as of the result..gotta be careful... yaknow?.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Well, it has hot wasn´t it? Did you smell anything burning while having the hand inside? that smelled like chicken? lol....Now....recently I just started using gloves for welding. Not because of the splatter or hotness but because of the arc burning in my hand. I need to find some gloves that fit me that are more soft because hitting the trigger or holding the torch with the ones the school has is a pain. Gr8 job then, thanks for the class My Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3 4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!

Reply:Ok class back to the tube job..these have "weld in taper lock bushings" in themif you dont know what those are..well heres the deal with them..first you re indicate the tube in and bor it out for the weld in bushings..in this case the bore had to be 4 1/8" and you face off about 1/2 inch after that..Attachment 4806now heres the parts needed to do the job..you need a shaft to turn them on as well as to line up the bushings with the keyway so both ends are in sync with each other..the weld in bushings are the big ones..the taper lock are the smaller ones and the set screws hold everything together..Attachment 4807heres the finish weld on the weld in bushings..3"deep in the tube..but there's a 3/4" step to the bushings..Attachment 4808and heres the gas lens and the tungestion after welding that i used..Attachment 4809next post......zap!Last edited by zapster; 12-27-2007 at 05:27 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:ok .. heres a pic of how you unlock the shaft from the bushings..notice only the taper lock bushing has threads..not the weld in bushing..when its assembled you put the set screw in there and toighten untill it "pops off" the bushing..Attachment 4810now notice the weld in bushing has the threads..not the taper lock bushing..when you tighten them up it sucks the taper lock into the weld in bushing and clamps to the shaft at the same time..(theres 2 screws to do the locking opposite of each other)after there locked on then turn 'till the right size..7.950(these will be sent out and carbide coated when done .025 per side to make them 8" when finished)and thats how it works.....zap! Reply:When people see me doing things like that chuck in a chuck they always look at me a little funny good to see i'm not the only one that does whatever it takes. Was the notch in the far way put there for clearence or was it a little unplanned excitement?Last edited by lars66; 09-03-2006 at 12:34 PM.
Reply:notch...hmmmm do you mean this?http://www.weldingweb.com/attachment...0&d=1156971877if so..no the bushings come like that for "flexibility" i guess you'd call it.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:oh i did that by hand with a disc grinder..1983 i think..the jaws needed a little clearance on that side one day..sometimes i wish i did'nt do it especially when i'm trying to set up a steady rest near the chuck..one edge falls into the slot sometimes... ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home. |
