Dip rods in what?

A friend wants me to take some larger pieces of usable plate out of the water[ not very deep] and i get to keep the plate. Probably will be some welding and cutting involved .  Another friend [ from Texas who was drunk at the time], told me to dip the rods in airplane dope before welding under water.  Does this sound like good advice?  Also do you think my gasoline torch will work well under water or should i stick to propane, or should i use acetelene gas?

Reply:if  you don't know the proper procedure for arc welding under water I suggest you skip it.  lots can go wrong and usually you want a specialized stinger and such to prevent yourself from getting shocked.you do coat the electrodes, but in what exactly I'm forgetting now.
Reply:Now tell me how you plain to keep the gas lit under water? Can you get a cable or hook on the plate and pull it out?
Reply:tankeedog,used motor oil works on 6013 rods...DC current only. (standing water)DUDE if you get between the current flow, you will know it. It will KILL if the currents path crosses your heart.Way to much background to explain before even suggesting attempting the task.Wet welding requires trainingUse a plate dog, clamps or something to grab and drag it out to work on.Good Luck ! the experience will not be found on the web.

Reply:Most of the underwater cutting we did when I worked at a comercial dive company, was with a Broco torch. It's similar to arc gouging. You use a special exothermic rod and pure O2 with a special stinger. It will burn thru pretty much anything.http://www.broco-rankin.com/broco/c_...tingsystem.cfmI know O/A can be used, but I believe it requires a special torch witch also feeds compressed air to shield the flame. It can not be used deeper than 15 ft or so however because you have to crank the PSI up too much after that. I think the gasoline torch may work. I know the guy I worked for was looking at them, but can't remember if they were for underwater work, or just topside. I believe there was a special adapter that needed to be used for underwater cutting with the petrogen torch,http://www.petrogen.com/underwaterI would seriously suggest passing on the welding, unless you really know what you are doing. That are quite a few additional hazards besides the electrical issues, such as hydrogen gas buildup/ explosions from underwater welding. We just bought all our rods for underwater welding comercially and didn't F around with DIY with that. I want to say we bought all the broco rods and welding rod from MarVel International in Pensauken NJ, the same company that serviced all our underwater com systems and helmets..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
