May seem crazy but is the effect of watching someone weld without protection the same for animals, dogs in particular? My dog stays in the shop most of the time with me but I have been kicking him out when I weld. He howls, cries and barks till I let him back in. The other day I caught him peaking up over the porch in order to see what was going on. There were no ill effects the next day but I dont want to let him back in if it could hurt him.
Reply:I have also worried about my dogs eyes. I would think that it hurts to look at the arc for a prolonged period of time and they will learn after the first time.UA Local 598
Reply:I would guess the welding arc would have the same effect on animal tissues (eyes) as it would on humans.  Just a guess.A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter   Victor O/A
Reply:I'm not a medical doctor, human or animal, nor do I play one on TV or the internet ...  Generally, the effects of an arc will be the same for humans and animals.  UV exposure may cause cataracts or accelerate their development, and the intense bright light may cause other vision problems. So unless you can get the dog to wear a welding hood/helmet or you set up some welding curtains (opaque or transparent), IMHO it is the correct thing to do to shield them from the arc.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:If you can get your dog to wear a helmet/goggles for the love of god take pictures! The world is amazing when you are slightly strange.
Reply:I had a German Shepard that watched me weld. I didn't know he was until my Dad came along one day and asked if if I knew he was watching me. I would put him inside the fence after that when I was working at home. It was too late. He developed cataracts within a few months. I had his eyes operated on three times as they kept coming back and after the third time he was blind.
Reply:your right. I think my bulldogs watch my every second in the shop. that knucklehead stood nearly right in the spark roost of the chopsaw the other day , just staring at me. I remember saying "move dummy" , he just lifted the leg that was getting burned themost.        thermal arc 252i  -  millermatic 350P -   miller XMT, cp300ts, 30a 22a feeders, buttload of other millers, handfull of lincolns, couple of esabs  -   Hypertherm 1250 G3

Reply:I don't think the dog would learn from the discomfort as it would come long after the cause.. Dogs, like most animals and humans learn from cause and effect. I don't think they would think back to this afternoon when" I was watching daddy weld is why my eyes feel like they have sand in them."I have had to tell hundreds of people not to look at the light. And a few service call jobs where the kids would be just standing there and be lookiing right at the weld when I raised my hood.Last edited by mooseye; 02-12-2010 at 03:14 PM.SA200,Ranger8,Trailblazer251NT,MM250,Dayton225AC,T  D-XL75,SpoolMate3545SGA100C,HF-15-1  RFCS-14 When I stick it, it stays stuck!
Reply:I'd invest in a curtain. The yellow plastic type will protect the dog, but let it see what is going on, reducing the chance that it will try to find a way to peek around. Just be sure it goes to the floor and high enough to prevent looking over. Also blocks sparks.
Reply:You know, I've wondered about this too. My dogs seem to like to watch when I'm welding outdoors.John
Reply:What was that about hurting the doggies eyesFelon Attached ImagesCaution lurker lives here" hmmm That is serious, pass the ganja and pick up a  24 of MGD"
Reply:Any old self-respecting mongrel follows company safety rules. Attachment 45996I believe that most dogs have much  more advanced reasoning capability than we give them credit for. I don't think that avoiding arc flash is beyond a dog's normal capacity for self-preservation. Especially when associated with eye pain and master's "NO!" and "go back." After all, do you find your dog staring intently into the sun? Or do you?Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:43 PM.
