Hi All,Can anybody guide me on the best way to Weld aluminium with stick?What setting would I have to change on the Lincoln to run Hobart aluminium rods?Thanks,Trevor.
Reply:Hello Trevor, can you explain the specifics of the situation where you will be using aluminum stick rod? I ask that because in order for most folks to make comment on your question they would probably like some more specifics. Such as: material grade and thickness?, are you going to be making welds in position or are you able to position your welds to make them in the flat position?, are these butt welds, lap welds, groove welds?, is your machine AC, DC, AC/DC?, what is it's amperage capability?. In all honesty, stick welding aluminum is one of the last choices that most folks would probably opt for when welding aluminum, gas welding might be the next least preferred. See about supplying a bit more information and you will probably get a bunch of information and suggestions for how you might proceed with your challenge. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Aluminum rods, we call 'em 'gull$hit because that's what it looks like when your done. Only success I've had is to make sure the rods are dry to the point of running a torch over them before you start. Whatever you're welding warm it up too and wire brush it till your arms ache. AC forget it, DCR is the only way I've had any luck, as for heat I can't recommend any as it's been awhile since I've used I'm sure someone will be along in a minute.What is the situation you have to use stick, no access t wirefeed or tig I would presume?.....Mike
Reply:Stick welding aluminum is for thicker material only. You will just burn through on thinner material. DC reverse polarity only. Dry rods are a must.
