I bought 4 boxes of Aluminum tig rids a few weeks ago and bought 4 brand new rodguard storage boxes to put them in.   I had used up my old ones this morning and went to get a new case out and ALL of the rods had turned green and were completely unusable!!!  I tried cleaning with everything, and had no luck.  Has anyone else had a problem like this?  Any idea what could have caused this?  My welding supplier told me to bring them to him and he'd give me new rods, and cases and see if he could find out what was going on.  So I am not out any money, but still gets me hot when i am in the middle of a job and discover something like that.  Just curious if any of you have had any type of experience with this. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Aluminum turned green?  That's not good.   No info to add, but please post what the problem turns out to be.  Other than those Rodguard cases turned those rods green.
Reply:It could be something leaching from the plastic interacting with the rods. One of my cousins was a chemist and one of her first projects out of school involved finding the source of some odd contamination that leached from a process tank.I suppose the test would be to put some of the same not yet contaminated rods (or pieces of them) in a glass jar and some in the rodguard and see if it's the containers or something wierd with the rods.Glad to hear your supplier is making good on it.  One of the prime benefits of patronizing a stand up supplier.Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.
Reply:If I find out something I will let everyone know.  Just doesn't make sense.  I was the only person they have had that has had trouble so far.  The cases were new as were the rods.  2 boxes 4043 and 2 boxes 5356.  I have two older cases and never had a moments trouble from them.  It's not a solid green, more of a transparent greenish tint to them, but if you try to weld with them,  as soon as you start a clean puddle and dip one in it turns black and acts as if it doesn't want to fuse with the puddle.  For some reason the rods were worse on the bottom end or the case than they were anywhere else. along their length.  I told my supplier to let me know what he finds out.  He sent me some new filler rods and cases today, but I'm scared to put them in the cases.  I just put a few in each case, and left the rest in the box they came in.  Leave it to me to be the ONLY person on the planet to have trouble like this.  ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:That's a new one to me.  I get TIG rod in the clear plastic tubes and haven't had that problem.   I got some new stick cases earlier this week and put sticks in them, I'll have to check them out for discoloration next time.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Desertrider, I have used the rod boxes for my sticks for years and never had any trouble.  This tig rod thing has me stumped. I talk to my supplier today and he said that the rods seemed to have almost a chemical contamination like it was exposed to something.  Perhaps something leeching from the plastic as mentioned above???  Anyway they are still waiting to hear back from the rod manufacturer as to what they find.   The clear plastic paks I have gotten were fine,  this is primarily with the rod guard cases.  I will mention I have some older rod guards that have done fine.  So I am gessing this is an isolated incident.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Has anyone else had problems with the rodguard filler rod cases?  I'm thinking about getting some instead of just keeping my filler rods (4043/308L/316L) in the cardboard boxes they came in.  I've had them on a shelf for almost a year and haven't noticed any visible changes.  I wish I had saves some of those old plastic blueprint and film tubes from years ago.  BTW, stainless steel brushes are not all created equal.  I was getting more porosity with my aluminum TIG welds lately, but couldn't figure out the cause.  I think the last batch of brushes I got was the culprit.  I left one of these "stainless steel" brushes outside in the rain and found it was dripping rust after a few days...Electronics Engineer (embedded controls)Miller 200DX w/ Coolmate 3Thermal Dynamics 82 plasma cutterGrizzly G0678 8x30 millPM1440BV 14x40 latheHF 6x12 surface grinder

Reply:Almost all new plastics will outgas for a short while but that generally depletes itself fairly soon. Maybe these were brand spankin new tubes and the gas doesn't affect most other fillers??
Reply:Could have been boxes made in China and if you've followed any news articles over the last 4 or 5 years then you know that there have been many issues with Chinese produced products containing all sorts of chemical contaminants.
Reply:Hammack,I just did some aluminum TIG this afternoon, after reading your post.  Like you, I bought some rod holders recently.  I checked my stock of filler metal and didn't see any problems.  Can you post a photo of the holders you had trouble with?  I'm curious to know what they look like, what color, who made them, etc.Thanks.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:Guys, I have been working out of town since Oct. and just getting settled back in here at home so I am just now catching back up with the forums.  I'll grab some pics tomorrow and get them posted.  I have purchased some tubes after I had problems with these, and they have done fine.  Never figured out what the problem was.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
