Ok,I just moved into overhead position at a night class.Been burning 6011, about 10lbs or so at the class and another 10lbs at home.I was surprised to see the instructor up the amps for OVHD.I was thinking of turning it down. His idea was to get the heat into the puddle quickly and move out faster. Is this a common practice??I did his basic 1-2 get out, 1-2 get out through the flat, horizontal and vertical. It seems to work fine, but gee the barbque effect, even when not overheating your puddle in OVHD is something to share with everyone.I was hoping for either conformation that this is an excepted practice, or someone to throw the flag here and correct me before i get too far into a bad habit. The instructor is busy with 13 of us, so not a lot of personal time. I can alter the technique upon recommendations and get by ok.I used about 70 amps on this machine uphill vert. worked great. Now he put it up to about 82. I was only using 75 or so flat and horizontal.Ok, so I have learned not to stand directly under the bead when working OVHD. Hah.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, mac
Reply:the metal goes where the heat is so it is common to turn it up in that position. Try not to push it into the puddle to hard, pretend you are painting the weld bead on.UA Local 598
Reply:everybody handles there heat a liitle diff.. If you can run 6010 at 70-75 flat, horiz and vert at that heat you should be able to weld overhead at the same amps. try changing your rod angle, stay alittle more on top the puddle. remember overhead is basically like flat only upside down. Out in the field you sometimes are a long way from your mach. so you want to be able to set you're mach. at one amperage to do it all. no contractor is going to want you running back and forth to you're mach. every time you change positions. I used to set my mach. to whatever I could weld a nice vert stringer. It may be a little on the cold side for flat but that can be handled with rod angle and speed. comes with practice. If you get burned up run your rod straight out of the tip of the holder and put a little bit of bend-up to it, this will allow you to keep your hand out of the fire and let you see better. revpol
Reply:ok, so it's coming together.I did an uphill vert today. Some 1/8 5P, turned down to about 60-65 amps. (started out around 75 -80)Couldn't believe it was me. Wow, this is fun.I try to make every bead better than the last, and it is starting to show.I wish I would have done this 30 years ago. Can't get my son into it. Bummer.Anyway, I am working on the overhead. Trying out the different recommendations and applying them to the other positions as well. Thanks for the help.Cheers.Mac |
