i am working on building a custom t3/t4 turbo manifold for a honda a20a engine. the manifold would consist of a mild steel exhaust flange and approx 14 sch10 ss304 but weld elbows, and about 12" os straight pipe cut for the collector. the machine i will be using is a miller syncrowave 200 tig. still reading up on  how to use the machine. i never welded a day in my life. i also have a table grinderwith wire brush for cleaning the pipes and acetone. ill take pics of my progress. prob wont start the welding until another two weeks once i get somewhat fimilar with the machine.the end result should be like thisthe are my partshere is my new machine, aint i luckythis is a log stype manifold i was starting, but i had a pro do the welding, the same motor and you can see the tight space ill have to work with
Reply:Well i gotta admit for someone that never welded before you got guts...but take a friendly suggestion..Please learn how to weld first before you (i'm giving this to you straight) ruin all your parts..just by the looks of the kit thats some serious $$$$ sitting there..and you will be   if you dont get the basics down first..now on the last 3 pics...am i missing something?i see a flange for 4 cylinders..where does the exhaust come out?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:yeah the log manifodl was never finished. basically it needed a small square hole cut into it and teld on thr turbo flange. i never did it cuz in the middle of the project i switched turbos and then i decided to go with a different style manifold. i have a bunch of stuff ill be praticing on. and once i feel i am getting the hang of it ill start trying to weld some of the 90 degree bends together. if i mess one of those up it would be $4 to replace, yeah it could add up but i am not going to cry over it
Reply:[QUOTEif i mess one of those up it would be $4 to replace, yeah it could add up but i am not going to cry over it[/QUOTE]  Like i said..you got guts and i like your attitude.. I think with some seat time you'll be just fine..Do yourself and us a favor?post pics of your practice stuff..no matter how much it may suck..we'll (all of us here) try to straighten you out before 4$ a whack gets in the way..good luck.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:yeah, i just got the machine fully runningt today. still playing with the gas, some of the settings ect. having a hard time with thew cheapo home deopt mask i brought.maybe you can give me some suggestions on setting this machine. its a syncrowave 200. my argon tank is a 75/25 mix i am starting off with a 1/16 309 rod. if i am going to start a root pass on one of the butt weld elbos, what amperage should i set the machine. how much gas should i be flowing.rember, ive never used anything like this befoire. trying to find somwone local that has a somewhat similar machine who can give me a few hands on pointers.
Reply:well i'm not familure with that machine..but amps is amps..try around 125..135 amps with the gas set @ 20 scfhsharp! tungestion..if you have a hard time starting the weld try jumping to 150 amps..do you have a footpedal?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:75/25- What gasses? I don't think you want a mix with CO2 in it...
Reply:75/25   you need 99.9% arogn for tiging what oyr planing to tigChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder

Reply:yeah, i was told to get 75/25 argon/co2. damn that sux cuz its a huge cylender (the one on the right)the 200 does have a footpedal. i played with it today a lil bit. as far as tungston and the torch cup ect i dunno. still trying to lear what they are, but i am using what came onthe torch. i got a box downstairs that came with some other stuff, ill have to look through it to see whats what.
Reply:nice stuff but you really need straight argon for what you want to do..dont judge anything you did tonite...because of the gas..once you get straight argon you will see a HUGE diffrence......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:well, not whanting to see the full cylender od 70/25 go to waste, what could i use it on? i got the hookup anyways, got the cylender full for $50, hopefully i can get another.

Reply:well, it was kinda a backdoor deal on the gas, but it its for aluminum ill def keep it cuz i want to do a couple of intercoolers. ill jusyt get another tank pure argon. i also played with the stick welding feature on the syncrowave 200 and i wasent sure if i was stick welding or plasma cussting, lol. boy i suck right now.also, i just found out my gas flow meter opens clockwise, maybe that why i was getting a weird reading. i guesws ill be learning something new everyday
Reply:get the argon...you will see a big diffrence and then we'll get you going......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:hopefully soon i can lay down some welds like this
Reply:LOl....I agree with Zap you got guts....but for me...the best way of noticing is having a Syncrowave on the back of your truck without anything supporting it (hope pic was taken when you´re unloading it)Now as far as SS welding goes, Ditto on what Zap said. Seems like a nice setup...how many PSI´s are you running? are you changing engine internals?  I was told more than 8-9 PSI you need to upgrade some stuff or you will blow up the engine. Nice machine...If it were that easy to get a TIG =(My Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:yeah, i took that pic when i just got the machine home. almost blew out my back lifting it out of that truck bymysel, lol (that truc kis a lifter ram2500). the motor i am building is a 89 accord a20a. i am redoing the whole motor from top to bottom. most honda engines stop at about 9 psi, mayb 15 fully build. since this is a rear honda iron block motor, i am building for 25 psi!!!!!! jason budd is running the same motor built running 30psi in a 93 civic coupe
Reply:WAIT NOW JUST HOLD THE FORT,is the 75/25 argon/co2 or argon/He?if it's HE than you an use it on aluminum if it's co2 than get a MIG and weld some steelChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:argon/co2
Reply:Is the manifold for a split exhaust housing?do you mean where the exhaust goes into the turbo? no
Reply:Originally Posted by zapstergood save!!!!! (actually that smiley is as close to a goalie as you can get)at least someones on their toes!!i missed that completly.. ...zap!
Reply:Where the exhaust enters the turbo housing, Yes.
Reply:use 100% argon.....practice alot.... finding a mentor helps.....MY skills are inmproving with every bead.....
Reply:I'm also with Zap, you got guts. My only suggestion is make sure you purge the S.S. By that I mean when you weld on it, tape of all openings and put another argon hose in at about 10cfm. This will make sure you don't sugar up the inside. (you don't want that) Good luck and make sure to keep us up to date with pics! I'll post a header I finished this summer. Sorry about the pics, I'll post more later. Reply:ill have to lear more about the purge thing, i hear about it alot
Reply:SQ... a little off topic but where did you get all those nice SS elbows and bends? What is the ID on those? They sure are pretty.  I'm looking for a decent supplier as well.
Reply:Looks like a fun project. Are those tanks in some sort of stand, to keep them from falling over?Good luck with the project.       J.R.

Reply:RE:  Gases for welding---       This may be too much information, but I don't think it is recommended to use CO2 in any combination to TIG  SS -->     http://www.thefabricator.com/Printer...le.cfm?ID=1024
