Problem: Forklift tire and rim damaged. No tire man or rim  available day after thanksgiving.Solution: Modify a truck rim to fit the lift truck by welding a new center with correct offset into the truck wheel rim. Parts - Local truck tire pile yields a tire and rim assembly. Same size tire, holds air, nice name too - “armor trac”. Truck rims have wrong offset for forklift. So the correct bolt pattern center was torched out of a second truck rim. Plate, 7/16, not too rusty, pulled from steel rack.Shop work - No time to set date on digital camera, let alone  fancy set up. A circle was laid out with soapstone and plasma cut freehand out of the 7/16 plate. Center of second truck rim was also cut into a circle so that the center with correct wheel mounting stud holes could be to be inserted into the 7/16 plate. Plates and rim where tacked together and checked to be true by spinning on the fork truck hub. Bench welded in position. Idealarc dc 400, LN7 feeder 045 solid wire.Fast and dirty, two men, two hours, spins true, back in service. Welds will not be ground polished or painted!   What do you think?Last edited by denrep; 08-26-2009 at 10:02 AM.

Reply:Was that a solid rubber tire ? A buddy of mine lost his eye when he was welding on a tractor rim... just curious... thanks
Reply:x26pfw, Sorry to hear of your friends accidentThis was a pneumatic tire. We broke the bead down before welding. No evidence of liquid or gaseous smells. Purged shop air through valve stem.  Assembly was held vertical on hub during the initial welds. Thought being, if somehow, despite precautions, there was to be a problem at least the assembly wouldn’t have a bench or floor to launch from. Do you know the cause of your friends mishap?
Reply:Nice job, might give you a little shimmy when you get above 60 or so ;-)Sure, I can fix it... I got a welder!!!
