Hey Chopper5..heres what i came up with..i think you should try "fusing" the pipe on the first pass..i had pretty good luck with that method this A.M...heres the fused pass outside..fused pass inside..Now i left the same settings on the machine..same cup/tungestion combo.same .045 filler..Heres the first filled root pass..here is the inside after that pass..next post for the cover pass.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Ok now heres the cover pass outside..cover pass inside..seemed to me like the inside got "better" after each pass..no porosity..did'nt "pull in" as to say..unpurged....So try this method and see what you can get.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:you got some nice undercut going there.. but the pass looks nice stainless is much easier, welding mild steel (especially hot rolled) with TIG SUCKS! cold rolled is wayyyyy easier.. but still not as sweet as stainless or aluminum
Reply:thanks zap i was thinking on just fuseing the root ,and ss is way easer to tig .ill give it a try this week i brought home a bunch of 3/8 scrap for my doughter and soon to be son in law to do some stick welding on ChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder

Reply:I would reccomend brushing the outside of the pipe, maybe even hitting it with a flapper wheel...just before putting the last pass on.  It will GREATLY reduce the tendency to undercut on the edges.  I have found that without cleaning off the color, you have to wait on that area to fill on each side.  Therefore, by cleaning it, I actually can do the weld faster, cause the metal just lays in on the sides without waiting.

Reply:I'll add a little more explanation now:The discoloration is the same thing as stainless sugaring when welded.  It's just a thin, mild coat.  Therefore, it's a contaminant, and reacts with the effect of a tendency to undercut.  With stainless, I brush each pass to remove this.  On carbon steel, I usually only brush it before the final pass, because that's the only one that a slight bit of undercut can't be covered with another pass.I think you'll like the outcome by brushing it.
Reply:i think i will too..maybe i'll go to the shop tomorrow and play...whatelse is there to do? ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Next time go a little hotter on your second pass (hot pass) this  tends to push the stringer in a little bit more.
