I am not sure how this axle shaft weldment was made.  It was a custom built job that has a circle weld (arrowed) joining the ujoint clevis to the axle shaft.  I need to replace the roundbar shaft due to a break at the wheel hub.I would like to cut off the existing shaft at the circle weld and weld on a new roundbar piece to the existing clevis.  The new shaft will be C1018 roundbar steel.  I am not sure which material the ujoint clevis is (cast steel, cast iron, etc...)  Is there a way to know which material the clevis is made out of or a filler wire that would work well here?
Reply:That has to be cast steel.  Weld a small piece of cold rolled (1018) to it and bugger it off.  You will know for sure.
Reply:just cutting it off and and welding on a new piece is NOT the thing to do..you need to take the cast u-joint out and bore a hole thru it..(nice finish)and do the same thing to the new round stock..then you shrink fit a new piece in to the both of them to "marry" them together before welding..it will never last any other way... we do stuff like that every day.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
