I take my 8th week test Wed on GMAW before switching to FCAW. I have to do a butt, vertical uphill. We get two pieces of 3/8" plate, beveled and placed 1/4" apart with a 1/4" backing strip. We fill it up with beads, then grind it flat after scarfing off the backing plate. Then we cut off 1" at each end to eliminate the cold starts, then cut what's left in 1/2. Each half is bent into a "U", face & root. Any cracks is a fail.I've been practicing all week. Trying to make sure I am burning in all directions on every bead. If anyone has any tips to offer I am all ears. Thanks, BMiller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.

Reply:Run it hot, and spend plenty of time on your sidewalls, When you run your cap make your motion tight and fast, the puddle should be very fluid. As long as you build a good shelf it wont fall out, so make sure that your depositing enough metal to support the rest of the bead.Have we all gone mad?
