Reply:welding looks sloppy but my concern is the fabrication. why was was the tube where the hiems are attached to the spindle cut into two? why couldn't that be one piece. Geometry/KPI?why do the a-arm end with flat stock? why is there a bolt between the spindle plate and the hiem tube? who ever welded this should of started welding the battery box first. With the internet, they should of asked more questions.Last edited by Stone_Elvis; 03-22-2010 at 09:29 PM.

Reply:Some people need to put the welder down and let someone with experience throw down. I have to agree with what another poster already stated. The welds are not the only issue. The person needs to learn how to fabricate just as much as they need to learn how to weld. Wow.... that rig is going to hurt someone."I Build Stuff"www.jmrmfg.comwww.509media.com

Reply:I've seen worse welds. Some of the tack welds look OK, for tack welds. Yeah, it does need 'some' rework on the design and the workmanship. The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Do your friend a favor. Give him some flat stock (cut a bunch of 6"X1" pieces) a hood and MAKE him pratice on lap joints, t joints and butt welds. If he got that far in to fab and didn't know any better he really needs help. Once he understands what good penetration is and how to set up a welder properly-then he needs to understand basic fabrication and basic cad design or how to google a blueprint on a decent hub assembly. I gotta give it to him for being creative. but he's risking his life and others if he doesnt understand what he's doing.I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
Reply:The welds aren't great by any means, but maybe he's still working on the piece... HOPEFULLY!! What just makes my skin crawl is the engineering on the whole thing!

Reply:It never ceases to amaze us what can be attempted. What is REALLY amazing is some of the stuff we see that will hold up to almost anything, and yet some projects that look really well built fail almost instantly. I have more than one middle of the night please fix this kinda projects that were never meant for long term service, and yet years later they are still holding up.FWIW, tell the builder of the project he needs to look at the hub, and really consider the bolts used as studs, and the tabs they are attached to. That stuff needs some real work, lest he use it and find those problem areas fail quickly. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return. |
