Well, I got around to repairing the crack in the square tube I had, got around to welding up rings on the edge of the tube, as well as a small truss. You guys think the top truss is built ok?Main tube: 1/2"Truss bracket: 2x4x3/16"Strap (and rings on the edge) 1x.25"Edit: Before someone makes a joke I just noticed my gf and I were wearing the same thing :P She has a cheapie helmet I bought just for her, I'm in the Satellite.
Reply:some of the welds look kinda sketchy, how much weight is it going to be holding up?
Reply:you could have got better welds if to cleaned off some O that rust first .but its a good start now for the rest of it clean 1" around were you plan to weld it will help alotChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder

Reply:Looks like it will be a heavy duty unit. What is the car behind you?John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Can you really build one cheaper than they sell for or are you building some special heavy duty one?By the time you buy a ram and the casters, not including the metal, it add's up fast.I think I paid $150 for mine on sale and it came with an engine leveler.Edit: Also, depending on how far out the attachment point is, mine greatly looses power the farther out you go.  Are you going to have it telescope, build multiple attachment points or do you have a real powerful ram?  My hoist has a collapsible boom for this reason.Last edited by coronet440; 02-07-2007 at 01:25 PM.
Reply:$150?  Gee, I guess that the $75 2 ton foldable shop crane one at HF (on super sale from $199) was a pretty good deal then!  I dont know if it had a leveler, but dont know of many anymore that dont (an easy fix anyhow if it doesnt).BTW: How do you like your Passport?  I almost bought one just a month ago, but decided TIG is the way I need to go in the future.  Still, I love that little machine!  I couldnt get past the portability factor once I looked at it, and it further steered my purchase decision.Ill leave the weld quality to the pro's, but would personally hit it with a bigger stick (always works in my shop), and if needed do multiple passes.  Ive been amazed at what a little bit of grinding and a wipe of acetone will do for my welds!  Thanks to some of the key members here!Edit:  Dont want to be picky or anything, but would really like to see some UV protection (gloves).Keep us posted!Last edited by DirtyLittleSecret; 02-07-2007 at 03:12 PM.ThermalArc 185MillerMatic 180 w/ AutosetVictor Cutskill Oxy/AcetyleneThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38and spite!
Reply:I did clean some of the rust / scale off, but it was getting late (as in 1am) so I started doing quick passes with the grinder and the cops still came :/ I personally don't understand considering we own 2 lots, with an 8' tall cinderblock fence, and I was in the garage. It traps most of the sound. Anyhow, Most of the welds are double-pass with torch preheat. I'm 90% sure I have good penetration because I did burn through (well, not all the way, but on the inside edge of the back ring I had a little steel icicle on the inside of the tube). I personally love the passport, great little machine. I use a 20lb co2 tank with a $40 oxygen regulator I put a co2 stem and nut on, and a 3/8" air quick disconnect. Runs airtools, airs up tires, and provides my shielding gas. The problem with a bigger machine is that we had rented this house a few years back, and they tried rewiring the house for reasons unbeknown to us. We've had an electrician come and check, but one 110v leg has 40A more on it than the other, and our 200A service has about 260A on it. Otherwise I'd be pimping a much larger machine.
Reply:you should put de wd-40 can away also

Reply:I love to build things myself. But, I priced out all of the parts and steel for an engine crane.  Nuts, Bolts, chain and hook, Hyd. Ram, casters, it came to approximately $400.00.  I went to PEP Boys and paid $129.00 for one that was complete and already painted, and I got a $20.00 rebate. Total cost $109.00, I couldn't buy the steel for that.  If it were to break tomorrow, I'd just weld it and continue on.Last edited by MJDamiani; 02-09-2007 at 01:46 PM.
Reply:Nice.I though she was you for a bit. I was like "Hmm....why does she call herself JohnR? Ehh, who cares......she's hot...."
Reply:Sorry, but I can't put my life into a PepBoy's lift. Something about 3"x3" 1/16" wall tube for the horizontal bar without even a partial sleeve at the end isn't confidence inspiring.BTW, my gf supports my habits regardless of what I'm doing. When we chopped my old racecar up in my backyard, she was there and even joined in on the fun. Hitting the wall at 80-some was no fun at all, but I walked out of it without a scratch, but was sore for a few days.
Reply:You can't put your life into a Poopboys lift, but you can let your darling girlfriend cut with an O/A torch without leather gloves and leather sleeves? No further comment.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Consider yourself fortunate having a gf who'll use a torch. My ex was so not into anything mechanical. She'd get bored 5 minutes into a job and just leave. To be fair, she did stick it out when we re-tiled and painted a big room. And although it may not be the best thing to cut bare-skinned she is wearing the right goggles, and I see flashback arrestors on the torch so that's good. I can't tell you how many muffler shop guys use sunglasses with a torch. Reply:It's not a HF hoist, he stated a "Pepboys" hoist and I've used one successfully for 3 years now lifting complete big block engine/trans. still bolted together. No excuse for his GF not wearing full protection. Don't be so quick to set this aside when we all know too well that accidents can and DO happen. With the correct safety equipment, they can be avoided!John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:I'm just interested in more pics of the GF.  There's just something about a girl in a welding hood   I have had my wife weld before.  Should've taken a pic cause she probably won't do it again.  She will help me tear down an engine though, she likes that.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:You may buy a certain make of engine hoist cheaper than you can build one, but will it be of the same quality.
