Running welder on batteries

Reply:Unless your machine was designed and made to accept DC input power, no.But you can, to a certain extent, weld using big batteries as the power source (aka 'welding machine') all by themselves.  Hook up the batteries in the desired configuration and put some welding leads on things.  Stick weld away.  Not all that controllable and no real way to 'adjust' the settings, but you -can- stick weld that way.One battery is not enough volts usually.  Two batteries in series is more appropriate for 'smaller' diameter electrodes.  Three batteries in series is usually enough volts to use most 'common' electrode sizes.  Make sure all wiring and interconnects are appropriate for welding currents. as vehicle batteries can dump H-U-G-E amounts of current if given the chance (like a short circuit, so don't stick the rod eh?    )  Running a loop of welding cable around a chunk of iron/steel pipe as a big inductor may help to smooth out the arc.  YMMV.Just trying to burn through something with a stick electrode?  Yeah, 3 '12volt' vehicle batteries in series can do that.  The best laid schemes ...
