I have a question regarding types of aluminium. I am in search of a tougher aluminium grade for the front gaurd of a unlimited hotsaw I built a couple of years go.  As per picture the front gaurd rides against the log keeping the pipes away.  The aluminium I used seems somewhat soft as the material stretches bending the 1 1/4 x .125 tube back towards the pipes.  I have since put a gusset behind but the material just seems to soft.  I think it is 6061 but not sure.  I will post a few other pics also.  I will be limited to staying with my design due to the drive setup etc.Robert AndrewsPredator Unlimited Hotsaw Attached Images

Reply:here are a couple of links, one is a comercial so I hope it is ok as the company don't exist anymore. the second video real shows how hard we hit the log and also shows the bar bending.  Never mind my yappin in the video, good footage at the end of what I am up against.Robert AndrewsPredator Unlimited HotsawLast edited by Rotax Robert; 03-06-2007 at 10:17 PM.
Reply:Holy crap!  What a saw!  You might have to use a harder aluminum like 7075 and bolt it together (cant weld 7075) or, this is the expensive route, weld it up and have the 6061 hardened to like t9 (I think this can be done).  The only danger here is it may become too brittle.Another idea is to maybe go chrome moly.  It wont be as light, but its not gonna be soft either.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:HOLY SH!T!!!!OK, doolittle has some good suggestions.Looking at the pics of the saw, I would find a way to triangulate that gaurd. Can you either go from the top of the gaurd and tie down into the bar that goes through for the handles?......or, make the headers like an old set of zoomies with the support between all of the tubes and tie the gaurd into that support so it can't bend back?I think a stronger material will only be a temporary solution to the problem. I think you need a little more engineering in how it's attached.- Paulhttp://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:Slugs ???  great site, go there all the time, they just don't know it.  Anyway the bar lasts about 20 runs or so then I build/bolt on another.  I thought 7075 was weldable  hmmm.  Im pretty new to heliarc though.Rotax RobertPredator Unlimited Hotsaw

Reply:It isn't going to matter what material you use with that design... Tube that size is going to bend from the impact at dropthrough. Simple (overly so) analysis:The working lever arm is however far up the bar you bump the log, and the resisting arm is 1.25". Call this 12.5" to 1.25". Call the impact force 500 pounds minimum (figuring the saw to be in the ballpark of 250 from watchig the film), this puts about 5000 pounds over 1/4 square inch of material (<- oversimplifying.... the loading will likely be more than this in some cases, less in many) for 20000PSI. Once the bar begins to bend, any distortion is going to make the resisting arm effectively shorter, increasing the bending load. Several good hits and it lets go, even with KSI steel tube (yeild in the ballpark of 50KSI), though that may hold up longer. Solid aluminum may do it, but a etter profile and/or bracing is probably a better choice. Maybe replace the 1.25X1.25X0.125 with 1X2X0.187, hitting it the hard way?BTW: I am TRULY impressed with the machine.
Reply:Your saw rocks. But I witnessed a saw accident personally a few years back and I won't go near a running saw without a bomb squad suit. Reply:I have seen the small block Ford one you have... My guess would be a Ballistic Material..Lets face it...Any kind of metal would be a hazard in this application..You would need a "Blanket" of some kind...Love your work...And I thought my Stihls were the balls... ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
