Another question this week was about the copper coloring on 70S-2 making a mess out of a weld..The scale is the culprit so grinding or removing scale before welding is a must..Here is a plate thats going to be the inside head to a roller..I pourposly did not remove the scale for this demonstration..The shaft is clean.. the plate has been acetoned and wire brushed..Here is the messy results..Notice how uneven the weld is and the overall crappyness of the outer edges..Brutal..Here is another plate and shaft thats been properly cleaned..And here is the results..I like the last pic the best..What about you?Clean the scale off and stop wondering why your tig welds look so bad..   ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Nice comparison experiment.
Reply:Very EXCELLENT demonstration. Thanks for taking the time to do that and show others the real world results. Nothing like pictures...wooohoo!John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Scale meaning the copper coating on the filler rod? I read that rod with copper coating should be avoided, or the coating removed before use. Nice Demo.

Reply:So what I gotta do is take my USPS scale off my welding table before welding? John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:What did you use to clean the scale off the plate, it looks like it was machined somehow.
Reply:Thanks Zap, I guess the moral is if you think it's clean, grind/sand/acetone it 3 more times. Thanks again for pic's.o.c.d.
Reply:i always clean befor i TIG, be it steel SS, or aluminum. some say its not needed but it dose make a diference. i would never consider trying to TIG threw scale, MIG .....maybe it would depend on the situation. nice example, thanks ZAP!! summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:tell the truth, the dime went in the soda machine at lunch didnt it. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Ok, so I´m mexican, so in order to understand this, i gotta ask....is scale just a type of core that metals have? is it on the plate or is it the 1 number in pic the shinny metal? If you can´t machine the part how do you remove it? will disc sanding or grinding work on steel? What´s the correct process? Thankz ppl  Attached ImagesMy Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:Elvergon.. The shaft is perfectly clean cold rolled round stock..The plates are flame cut from a piece of hot rolled flat plate..Cold Rolled is nice and shiney everyday steel..Hot Rolled has the scale on the outside with the nice shiney metal "inside"The scale is ony about .010 thick per side..But it makes a mess out of tig welding..Mig and Stick will blow over it like nothing...Hope this helps you out.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Jeesh..Sorry about the rest of the question.. Yes to remove the scale you can use a grinder..flapper wheel..Whatever it takes..On the plate I did I machined off the scale when I bored the plate for the shaft in the lathe..Removed about 1/2" from the weld area about .020 deep.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:the sacle is what makes it flat grey or black insted of shiny. its on all hot rolled steel but some are worse than others.i usualy claen it off befor MIGing also but like ZAP said its not needed for MIG. im just ainal about it i guess but i like to start with clean steel whenever possible. i am also not on a time clock so i can take the extra time to remove it when MIGing. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Is this contamination cause of scale? btw its mig and its contaminated Attached ImagesMy Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:i tend to clean scale all the time mig, stick etc. even on scrap pieces i use to set up my machine.if you ever do some migging and experience the wondering wire effect, i bet you forgot to grind Here is some advise from Ed Craig's book "Gas Metal Arc & Flux cored Welding parameters"The tenacious mill scale often found on structural steels will result in excessive Gmaw spatter and poor weld bead appearance. The mill scale makes the weld sluggish in its solidification often producing a convex weld surface with weld rollover at the fillet weld toe. The mill scale, in contrast to the steel, is a poor conductor of current. To overcome the reduced conductivity, increased voltage is required.

Reply:since this is a tig post and there are so many post on tig....i notice in your 2 pics the dips are flat is it possible to get nice round dips on steel and stainless like you do on your aluminum work?
