I scrapped out 700+ lbs of steel yesterday.  I was shocked when they paid me $43.  It's up to $.06/lb., wow.  Just 3-4 months ago I took 600lbs and it was around $.04.  Anyway yesterday, I picked up 900 lbs from my supplier and he said expect an increase of $.03/lbs soon.It wasn't long ago I was excited about an increase in scrap from $.01 to $.02.I have an old truck, I was thinking about selling it for part, I may just scrap it, now.No real point here, just $.06 is a lot.  However, I am sure I will feel it when I purchase steel.
Reply:It's sickening to me, they pay you 6 cents but when you call and want a piece, it's 50. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Last time I tried to scrap anything it was $30 a ton for steel.  My friend got $80 for a Toyota truck chassis and body the other day, I'd say he made out pretty good considering he probably had less than 1500lbs of steel.
Reply:I scrapped some yesterday. $8.00 per 100lbs, or $.08 a pound. I had about 1ton and got $147, talk about suprised. Last time I was there it was $.04 per lb.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:the main reason is there is a shortage of the stuf world wide, china is using over 1/3 of the worlds steel at the moment so its getting dearer to buy, in Aust its going through the roof in some areas and the buy back for scrap has gone up a little so those who want it have to pay those who have a little more.I own a 87 troopie (rust is slowly owning it  )I ride a quadand I love sticking metal together.  And I live in OZ...  (Geelong)
Reply:Buying out from the scrapyard last week, I paid £0.47 per kilo including tax - that's twice what it was 18 months ago. In the UK, two years ago, YOU paid the scrapyard to take a car off your hands for scrapping! Hence, so stuff got dumped by the side of the road. Now, people scour roadsides for scrap metal to take in.China and India are using VAST quantities of steel, copper and aluminium at the moment. I read somewhere that in rural India, the people aspire to having galvanised corrugated steel roofing. Across the country as a whole, thats a LOT of tin sheet...Makes me think I'm in the wrong business.
Reply:$240 a ton in chicago
Reply:Well I hope prices are good here. I have a ton, well probly more like three tons to scrap this weekend. Parted out some trucks this week. Also my mother is a lender and took back a house of theirs only to find the back yard full of scrap!Got a heavy duty engine hoist from it all, and a 100 gal propane tank. I think there is a trailer also with a Ford 9" axle! Reply:$128 a ton for steel here yesterday, that is what they were paying at the scale. Copper is insane as well as clean aluminum.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I got $38 USD for the coils out of my recently replaced A/C air handler yesterday, and $6 for my collection of vises.  I picked up a nice ~50 year old bench vise the last time I was at the scrap yard and promised myself I would get rid of my three broken vises to make room for it.
Reply:I dropped my jaw today when I went to the steel supply yard.Been doing some spring cleaning and took all the junk radiators and a/c condensers to the yard today. I laughed when he handed me $54 for 66 lbs!Patriot Performance AutoLincoln Power Mig 255CLincoln AC-225 StickVictor Journeyman O/AQuincy QT-5 Compressor

I went in to a house yesterday and water was running everywhere because they took everything while the water was still on.Will   Supports Autism Awareness                            My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .

Reply:Yeah I'm not much for scraping cars. To me every part of a car is usable. Like the other day at the yard I seen a guy scraping a 89 Fifth Avenue, and I need a rear end for one. Reply:Are you all getting a dollar a pound for SS no matter what grade? Here alot of the places will try to stick a magnet to it and if it even remotely is drawn to it they dont want it..or offer to take it for next to nothing.

Reply:Yahh, they both have not moved in the 23 years we have been here on the farm. I'm guessing from looking at the ground in the general vacinty, there was quite a bit more equiptment around 'em. 16 years ago, we gave 20 + implements to a local history groupe, "Field Day Of The Past", we had a "field day come tax time!Bruce The Welding ChefLincoln Weld-Pack 3200 NORWELD StickStanford Hill Farm
Reply:"I've never taken them any silverware, LOL"   I am a Rigger by trade and when we replace a whole suit of standing rigging we are left with hundreds of pounds of 1X19 ss wire as scrap. Now i know the wire is 316 grade ss. I also know most ss can become slightly magnetic if it is put under large strains which all of this wire has been and for up to 20 to 30 years. We probably have over a ton of it laying around right now that no one will take and i dont know what to do with... and no im not gonna just give it away because it has to be worth something.

Reply:It is Can $ 1.50 for a pound of SS in Ontario , Canada. Will check copper Monday.
Reply:Well I have myself a nice scapping job here soon. My mothers company owns a house locally that someone put a big work shop type cab, in the back yard. It looks military, maybe off a duce. Was on something with dual wheels. Anyways its just the work bed sitting on the ground. They used it for a shed I guess. its on the property line so it has to move. It is double wall construction so I think it will weigh around 3500-4000 lbs.Patriot Performance AutoLincoln Power Mig 255CLincoln AC-225 StickVictor Journeyman O/AQuincy QT-5 Compressor
