Hi i am just starting in the welding  and i am interesting in build this one berrien buggy warrior  but i really dont know wich welder is the best and cheapest to do this work i dont have enought money i can only spend 150 bucks on the machine, so wich one you recomend me.At this moment i have a hf 90 amps mig welder but i think is useless on this job. Thanks and i hope you can guide me.
Reply:Sorry to break it to you, but, a limit of $150.00 is going to keep you smack in the middle of the "useless welder" range.Save up more and purchase a name brand (Hobart, Lincoln, Miller) welder in the 220volt category.  You won't end up with regret or the limitations you currently have with your HF 90 amp unit.  (Just my opinion).
Reply:$150 will buy you a used AC stick welder or another small 110v mig, that's about it, unless you come accross a really smokin' deal.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:If the budget is that tight, solve the budget issues before building toys. This will result in better, safer toys. If you invest in tools, toys become easy. If you go for toys first, you won't have near as many toys OR tools. I like tools, and I like toys. The way to win is always "tools first".  One very old and very useful custom is to buy a (quality) tool of some kind every pay day, even if it's small and inexpensive.
Reply:There is nothing wrong with a Lincoln buzzbox. I have three 250 amp ac/dc 100 percent duty cycle .Two of them were under water during Hurricane Goerge. When I came back after the stormI took a look, these will never run again as there was 36 inches of water in the shop. They still will burn 5/32 6011 all day long if they have to.Now all machines about 5' off the floor , I learned that you cannot fight mother nature.Look for a used Lincoln buzzbox ,it will do a good job.  Good Luck with your work
Reply:save your money i get so many jobs from landscapersfarmers and people that bought a HF welder and otherco.  that they tought they spend $300 on a welderand would save money now they have to pay for a real welder or paysome one to do the work and there trying to sell there china welder on craigslist for $75.00
Reply:Thanks for the answers, so Im going to save some money and then buy a real welder. but I have a cuestion how many amp Im going to need to weld?, the entire chassis is 1-1/2 pipe, I dont want a pro welder I just want something that i can go and drive save,  whith out risk or any damage Again thanks for the answers.
Reply:Don't forget about dedicating a couple hundred hours of practicing before you start your build, its not something you'll learn in a few weekends.
Reply:Like the boys said save up some cash. When you do, go with a MIG it is much easier to learn how to lay down a good weld for a novice.Lincoln makes a decent 110 volt machine "Lincoln Electric Power MIG 140C" but you will still spend close to $900.Scotthttp://www.welders360.com/New guy.
Reply:Used 220 volt portable Lincoln and Miller migs can be found for in the $400-600 range.  There was a Millermatic 175 on Craig's List recently for $500 and that's what I paid for my MM175 a few years ago used too.  The 170-180 amp 220v migs are plenty enough to weld the 1-1/2" pipe that you're talking about and allow enough head room to do other projects as well.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:check around, craiges list e-bay? there's got to be some old ac-dc buzz boxes around for that money. I have a old tombstone that we use once and a while for stick, scratch start tig and a miller suit case squirt-gun that welds great. the old mach. cost me 100.00 . the adjustment crank was alittle stiff but cleaned-up, works fine.   revpol
Reply:I second the AC/DC buzzbox (of the Lincoln/Miller/Hobart persuasion) idea. I have more advanced machines, but I'll keep the AC225/DC125 Lincoln just the same. It's worked fine for over 20 years and more than paid for itself.
Reply:I'd say look around craigslist,  I don't know a lot about choosing a welder, but these look pretty nice. Some of them are a little over $150, but not all of them.http://southjersey.craigslist.org/tls/1718372698.htmlhttp://southjersey.craigslist.org/tls/1717402181.htmlhttp://southjersey.craigslist.org/tls/1696370497.htmlhttp://southjersey.craigslist.org/grd/1694930831.htmlThere must be some near you.If it ain't broke, your not tryin'! -Red Green
Reply:Hi again looking on craiglist i found this one Lincoln AC 225 welder - $150, did you think is enough good to use on the chassis?, is very tempting.
Reply:Yes. But regardless af what machine you eventually lay hold of, it will take you lots, and lots, and lots of practice to become proficient with it. Be advised, the better machine will offer both AC & DC.  All the same, my first machine was an AC 230 amp transformer powered unit I bought new, on sale, for $110.00City of L.A.
