Had to go in this A.M. and put a weldment together so it can be machined first thing monday..Here is the mock-up..Now....about those gussetts...This is not the way we do it..This is more like it...As you can see I lost the corner..You should do that to every one because you can't weld into..or out of a corner..Its a waste of time just trying..So don't bother.. So now its on to the tacking..Rule 1..Measure and re-measure all your dimentions..Now tack it..After tacking recheck all the dimentions!!You have no idea how much fun it is to get apart once its finish welded if there is an error.. Next post has the finished results.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Ok now we're all done! And by the way...We don't have any vending machines in the shop..So it's still the same dime.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Welding Gussets?  I do em all day These were 48"  I used a mig and the job still took 47 hours.  18 of em, 3/4".  On windy days I had to stick em with 5/32 7018.  I don't think you can see, but the corners are cut out too.Not as pretty as Mr. Zap, but it paid for most of my Ranger 250.And YES I could bend em pretty good if I didn't alternate sides of the gussets as I went up.David Attached ImagesLast edited by David R; 03-24-2007 at 07:04 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Very nice. And good explanation on why you didn't run through the notch.I'm spendng way too much time in the office and doing other maintainance anymore..... I'm out of practice. Never was a welding god, Not even a welding junkyard dog at this point.

Reply:Nice work as usual, but I'd really like to know more about what that thing is for. I can't think of a reson that something mounted with 10-32 screws would need to be mounted to a gussetted 1/2" peice like that. One other thing about doing gussetts like that. In thinner material like a bike frame, by not welding it all the way it allows a little movement so that in a shock load it will just flex a little instead of cracking. I don't think that thing is going to flex much, but had you been welding 24ga it would come into play.

Reply:I believe maxy was pointing out the apparently idiotic 'safety' rule of no cell phones or cameras because of the slight chance of a tiny spark from the electronic device, when we are talking about welders at the same place making large arcs, sparks, and molten metal on purpose. And yeah, zap does like his TIG.That 1/2 inch thick metal may be being used with only 10-32 screws because they want the piece to be beefy and solid and not vibrate or move.  Or maybe they are going to stick weld the 25 HP 3-phase motor onto the top of it.  Or someone typoed a hole or thread call out somewhere (guy at customer: 10-32 holes?  They're supposed to be 1-8 and 2 of them!  Smudge the 8 a bit and it can look like a 3, then mush the 2-places call-out too close and you have what looks like a 1blur-32 so it must be a 10-32.)Match the tool and task for the job needed.  Some tasks or job requirements may need all edges and seams and possible foreign-material or FOOD or process-material trap-points to to welded completely and smoothly.  In which case one might have to jig or fixture the 'main' upright in place and weld it fully to the base plate, then make a small corner notch on the gusset to just clear the main fillet weld, and then weld the gusset in place and fill in the notch as well.  Or the part may have to meet critical fatigue life specs and all weld discontinuties (like undercut, or craters, or starts or stops) would have to be eliminated to minimize crack initiation or propagation points. It all depends on the needs of the job/project.It's also probably why there was no call-out or need for a double-bevel 100% penetration weld, the relatively small fillet is enough for the service of the part.Hey zap, out of curiousity and since we're asking you questions, about how much penetration do you estimate you got on that 1/2 inch plate?  About 1/8 inch on each side?  Just asking.
Reply:[When its tacked in the right place and in the right order...Distortion can be eliminated...that place and order....Is that just best judgement left top, right bottom etc...

Reply:Ok, so the welds are beautiful as they always are  But what I don't understand is why you don't weld into the corners.  At the last job I had, it was an expectation for us to weld (Mig, Tig on both steel and aluminum) inside corners.

Reply:Leaving the corner out also helps prevent water from accumulating and causing the assembly to rust out.
Reply:You are correct! I am laughing at your welds right now. My advice to you would be to practice.

Reply:Nice fillet size. A good welder could weld into the corner. I am not ragging on you, not everybody is fit to weld. Some people can do it and some people can't. Just keep it up, you may be able to do it someday!!! Mcdonalds may have a fry cook position available.

Reply:What are the requirements for teaching? In the Tig classes I have taken, you would get about a "C".  Now that you are done replying messages to me you will have time to practice! Practice makes perfect! I have proven my point!
Reply:The only point you have proven to anyone here is how much of an a$$ hole you are..Not even 10 posts yet and all you do is rag on me..For all we know your just a bozo with nothing better to do..I'll even bet you were here before as someone else..the authorities are looking into you right now..You will not last long here..Trust usLike I said..PUT UP OR SHUT UP.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:nice welds there zap.. i have some aluminum welds at work which absolutely must be welding in an inside corner cause of the type of extrusion (i'll try to make a picture) but i was just wonder what you thought about thathttp://specific.net

Reply:As for Zap, I'm a little dissapointed man. Where are the pictures of the parts you make in use? You "get all the fun jobs", and can lay down a great bead, but whatever this weldment was for has to be at least a little bit cool to look at, share the fun
