drill/weld/somehow connect a relief valve with a shutoff switch into the undamaged portion of the pipe and vent the oil out of that, making it easy to weld a huge piece of metal onto the broken end of the pipe (thus sealing it), then close the relief valve. this is for the bp oil spill in the gulf, by the way.  i know that the pipe can be welded on, but how then would the main pipe be opened to allow the oil into the relief pipe, a blow torch, but the section needed to do it would be inside the weld.  maybe the pipe could be weakened before the relief valve is welded on, then somehow blowtorched off afterwards.  i'm not a welder or engineer, i just thought this up outta the blue and need some brainstorming from yallsee a drawing of what i'm talking about at my blog.  thanks for looking and thinking about thishttp://leakidea.blogspot.com/2010/05...n-gulf-of.html

Reply:slickmick, thanks for the effort.Underwater welding is rarely done because of the weld properties. It is done for temporary emergencies and salvage operations, bolt on patches are preferred and again temporary. Finally BP is attempting the correct procedure of removing the bent riser and lowering a LMRP Cap directly on the BOP Stack. I hope it Works !!!See this link:http://www.bp.com/genericarticle.do?...tentId=7062491Bad news is the possibility a Hurricane entering the Gulf Of Mexico before the Relief Wells are completed. The impact of this disaster is still unknown. My State, Louisiana is only seeing the beginning, heed my words, the entire Gulf of Mexico, North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea will feel its impact for years to come, decades to recover. Now my Rant on greed. Why are they NOT lowering a Cap with a Gate Valve that can be securely attached that applies compression on the gasket. Then proceed with a Drill Mud and Concrete Top Kill ??? Why have all but one attempt included recovery risers ???
Reply:Are there any pictures or sketches of the tangle of pipes? The news videos sure don't show the problem and a cartoon they showed yesterday on the latest fix doesn't look anything like what I had pictured in my mind.It still looks to my as though a very thin visqueen tube could be lowered over the leak and extended that whole mile to the surface to at leaste contain oil until the pipe gets repaired. I hear all the objections about currents and pressures  but keeping it positioned would be like flying a kite- and anchor weights could be wired every hundred feet or so and secured to the bottor-takes a lot of visqueen and wire-but thats cheap. Pumping sludge from a 10' tube is easier then skimming off the whole gulf.
Reply:The ascent must be controlled and kept at pressure, if not the gas molecules that are not bonded to heavy elements will expand. The fumes are seen as flares, aka natural gas, they need to be contained at pressure or properly vented and burnt. Not sure what the Well Head pressure is and I do not think that will be made public. These are the fumes making people sick.Pressure of Salt Water at Depth - 5,000 feet = 2182.3345 psi (pounds per square inch) Remember this pressure mainly effects gases and compressible materials. A cylinder of a welding gas at 2,200 psi at the 5,000 foot depth would have almost no bursting or collapsing pressures on the vessel walls because the internal and external pressures are almost equal. Also, they do not want Sea Water introduced into crude and gas mix because if the Sea Water (H2O) molecules break down at pressure with the natural gas a combustion formula is complete and dangerous before reaching Sea Level pressure. Hydrogen gas alone is combustible.Use the rule of NEVER NEVER EVER GET OIL ON THE HIGH PRESSURE SIDE OF AN OXYGEN GAUGE !!!A SCUBA Diver has the basic understanding of the principles being taught of Nitrogen Narcosis and the Bends. Saturation Divers Training gives broader details but still not all that needs to understood of Deep Oil and Gas Exploration. To me, I just keep seeing Greed behind these failed attempts. I know good and well that Oceaneering International can perform the task and I'm having a hard time believing that the right procedure has yet to be implemented. Unless the Well casing itself is suspect of failure preventing a Top Cap. Right, a dog gone Shut off valve can easily be engineered for a ROV install, shut the well off or at least decrease the flow, then setup the LMRP Cap on that for oil recovery. At least then if a Hurricane does enter the Gulf Of Mexico, an ROV could shut the well off or decrease the flow and the drill ship can raise the LMRP Cap to ride out the Storm.I sure hope I made some sense here. Please wish us Luck, Thank You !!!
Reply:Zlick- sounds like you are pretty close to the action, what exactly do you do?If you cannot convince them, confuse them.         Harry S Truman
Reply:zlick,  Please explain why they couldn't modify the La bounty type shear into a crimper, not a cutter.  If they made the 'blades" mash together instead of passing by and cutting, would it not crimp the pipe closed, and maybe a series of these crimps would be necessary.  If that didn't stop it, perhaps it could be folded and re-crimped. Yes, I know it is happening a mile down, but with the rov's it seems a bit simpler than what is now planed and could have been done or at least tried in week one. ANY, THOUGHTS?Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:> Thoughts...Greed of course has to do with it. Also fear - fear of possible (not likely but possible) prison terms and various severe career problems which on a personal level seriously impact decision making. Anybody who makes _any_  real decision is going to be crucified for it if it doesn't result in the Perfect Save. How many heroes you think are in the top executive level at BP? How many heroes you think are at _any_ top executive level anywhere in the world any time? And we in American believe totally in BLAME and LIABILITY and while this helps make people careful, sometimes it really damps down initiative or honesty for anybody but Jesus Christ (for obvious reasons!).This is not a supportive encouraging atmosphere for the technical people to excel in; especially since many of them probably compromised their decisions in the past to stay in line and be a team player. IOW, they're not innocent and so they have no rock to stand on to all of a sudden start making honest and painful reports and plans and decisions.MAYBE the government could break it open by saying something like "the guy who solves this problem  NOW gets all the oil leases around there that BP now holds". That would probably get some results but Nagasaki would be nothing to the bomb blast that would set off in Congress! Communist! Socialist! Big Brother! Treason! Rape! Murder! REVOUTION!! Rufus

Reply:ok, this is great, yall sound so smart, this is where i want to be.i've come up with a better idea.sounds like they want to keep getting oil out of that well, for some strange reason.  can't we wait until the relief wells are done and get the oil that way?  how can they ask for us to find solutions if they wont tell us the pressures involved or the exact condition of the pipe?anyway, i spent a few hours on this, i hope yall enjoy.http://leakidea.blogspot.com/2010/05...n-gulf-of.html
Reply:Slickmick, the first well box BP sent down was the same basic principle. It was 40ft. square, and 100 TONS. It had several 24" ports that could be closed off and tapped for oil extraction. The gases within the oil mixed with saltwater, and formed some hydrogen rich ice crystals.....enough to plug the box, and float it up off the pipe once the holes could no longer vent. It became a big ice cone, and the pressure of the oil pushed it up and off.Keep thinking about it, there are a lot of ideas to be gone over and tried before this is done.....And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
