Ok not really.  My son saw my High Frequency box and tig torch water cooler and decided it made an excellent drum.  So I put the torch in his hand and snapped a picture.  But he dropped it when I tried to get his attention.I decided at the age of 5 or 6 I will start teaching him to tig weld.  Make it interested by having him build bikes for himself, go carts, fun projects so he gets interested in it.  And by the time he is 14 and legally able to work he will be certified across the board and doing some super technical work after school at one of the local shops.  And by the time he's 18 and moving out he will be trained, certified with more experience than a college grad.    Maybe working at Boeing, NASA, Lockheed Martin, who knows!    Just a thought...Last edited by WelderBoy; 05-19-2007 at 08:18 PM.

Reply:I don't want to rain on your parade but here's what happened to me.  I started teaching my son to weld at 5 yrs. old.  He could run a decent bead for about 5-6 inches.  After that, he started losing interest.  After my continous attempts to get him in the garage with me, he didn't want to do it at all.Now that he's 15 & I divorced his lazy mother last year, the kid barely knows the difference between a crescent wrench and a phillips screwdriver. I only have myself to blame for this, and now I think it's too late to turn things around.  I've told him before - "I sure hope you get an education so you can afford to hire someone to fix your stuff when it breaks.  If not, I hope you learn enough from me to B.S. your way through it and figure it out on your own."Again, unfortunately, he knows WAAAAYYYYY more than I do, and anything I tell him is completely stupid and untrue.  The little S.O.B. is just like me when I was that age.  I want to rip his head off and use his neck to hang my Huntsman welding helmet on.OK - my rant is over - I am calm now and feel much better.  Now how did 2 cigarettes get lit and both are hanging from my mouth?? THAT'S WEIRD!!!   Don't push your kid - let him WANT to learn.  Make it FUN - if he ain't having fun -do SOMETHING ELSE.  MOST OF ALL - HEED MY WARNING.
Reply:I bought a dune buggy kit and told my kid to stay out of my shop...Now, every time I go out there he wants to come along and help clean up or something...There are sneaky ways to keep thier interest.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:WelderBoy Please make sure he has good protection when you start teaching him. At that young tender age it could only take a good burn or a shock to scare him away from if for a long time.tom
