Random question...  has anyone here ever fabricated an umbrella type clothesline?  The kind that looks like an umbrella without the top cover?  Any info - types of metal or  processes used would be greatly appreciated.FWIW, It's a gift, online they are $55 shipped but I thought if I fabbed it up it would be more personal. Thanks in advance.
Reply:I had actually given that idea some thought last year; our current one is about half a century old, and showing it's age. I did look online last year, but couldn't see any details well and assumed the 'new' ones are probably relatively cheap junk imported from China, so making a new one myself might be the only way to get a decent one. Haven't recently looked at the details; I believe some of the horizontals are "U" shaped for something to slide in, and haven't thought what to use for them, but thought that a cast bronze hinge section for around the main pole would be nice. On second thought, maybe just rectangular tubing with an exterior sliding box would do for the horizontal mains.Have you ever studied one, close up? Any ideas so far?
Reply:I have not seen one up close, but the deciding factor would be the price of the material, (whatever that may be).  The other concern would be the device used to support the item, as it must be removeable.  I was leaning towards a pvc type pipe in the ground a few feet, secured in some way.  By the way it's for my mother.
