I'm currently working on a 6 inch schedule 80 untested pipe test piece with a 45 bevel and a 1/8 root face and 3/32 gap using 6011 for the root on a sync 200 and amps ranging from 75 - 90.  The problem I'm having is either blowing out the keyhole or the bead acting like its cold and I end up with a high ridge or slag inclusions.  Rod is being dragged and whipped watching for keyhole and blow out but its as if the rods are bad or the machine is and I have tried everything including relocating the ground to the work piece and using uncooked and cooked rods and preheating the pipe and different pieces.Same pipe I did 2g with little issue, could it be that its 5g and a pain with the rod and the position?
Reply:If you did it in a different position without an issue, then the problem isn't the rods or the machine...  MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:37 1/2 degree and 30 degree bevels are standard in the industry. I can see why 45 would open up on you, but you can still overcome it. I dont typically use 6011 for root so I am afraid I cannot be much help here. If you were around 37 degrees with 6010 5p+, you would have an easier time with it. If it were 5p, I would be at 70 - 75 amps for the root, but 45 degrees means I would turn it down a little more. 6011 is an all position rod so I would guess thats not an issue. I think its all heat and rod angle. Can you post pics?UA Local 598
Reply:Don't mean to hijack this thread, but have a question for WHughes. When do you use 30° bevel? Thinner wall pipe? Thanks!Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Agreed.6010 5P+ is my choice of electrode for root passes on carbon steel pipe as well. It is also the code rod for root passes in pressure pipe. 6011 is not.I like to use 3/32 rod with a strong 3/32 land and 3/32 root gap. Thats what seems to work for me.37 1/2 degree bevel is what you want to use. Concentrate on youe electrode angle and heat and you will get it.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:I also agree with the choice of 6010 5P+. I run a little hotter myself with a 3/32 gap, 1/8" landing using a slow drag and only using the jacking motion when the keyhole opens up. I've run as hot as 85amps but that may be the machine running a little cold (inverter).

Reply:30 bevels are also used on some alloyed pipes, most commonly like the ones used in natural gas peipelines.  Not only does a 30deg bevel tend to fill out faster but your putting in less heat and weld material which means less shrinkage and dilution and smaller HAZ.Have we all gone mad?
