I'd helped a friend and his contractor with a sixty by hundred building.  When it was done there was a sixty by sixty clear span middle. My bud decided there was wasted space.  He wanted a loft, attic if you will.Contrary to popular opinion I figured we could build one without sacrificing the clear span floor space.First I decided the engineered beam really wanted to be a truss. Attached Imageslife is good
Reply:Then I put in six inch jr I beams every two feet Attached Imageslife is good
Reply:I welded in an expanded metal floor.  Good for ventilation, great for dust control, and strength without all the weight. Attached Imageslife is good
Reply:This added twelve hundred feet of floorspace.  And the plans for the elevator might interest some. They've installed a two post lift.  And the plan is to use the hydraulic pump from the lift to also operate a forklift boom.Yup.  We're talking about just the boom off of a forklift for an elevator.Slick, huh?life is good
Reply:very nice.   I'm impressed.   I can't wait to see pics of the elevator.  What kind of welder did you use?
Reply:I'm not picking at your design, just wondering why the 6" I beams? Isn't that overkill? Is alot of heavy sh1t goin upthere? I think the flooring was an awsome idea!

Reply:It's weather resistant with power outlets for the compressor, welder, etc. Attached Imageslife is good
Reply:The space was irregular in shape.  Narrow at one end and wider at the other and since his garage was full of car stuff and tools he wanted to be able to use his carport for some projects.Sometimes you have to dance with the one who brought you and make the best of it. Attached Imageslife is good
Reply:The lower intrusion or shelf is there because underneath is the drainage lines I had to put in to route water off the property.  No one wants a dam storage area. The sliding doors means you can get to any spot on any shelf without having to crawl into the shed. Attached Imageslife is good
Reply:Aluminum and cedar, who woulda thought? Attached Imageslife is good
Reply:I am concerned that there is no connection to the join between the wall column and roof beam.  Connecting in the middle of the roof beam puts a bending moment in that beam.  Also it might be prudent to truss /cross brace longtitudinally to the end walls.  If your end columns extended above the floor they could be connected by cross bracing.   That carport storage is very nice and clean looking.
Reply:Damn, that carport storage is sharp. I can't wait till my buds have the money to do things right.

Reply:Love the whole project.  The carport idea is awesome!
Reply:I love the loft!  But don't let OSHA find out about that "forkavator".  They would not like that at all.Jon

Reply:Very Cool, Then!!!!
Reply:I agree with the overkill statement, but what the heck? If the dude wants to pay for it, it makes for a superior product. I'd like it.  You could probably never outgrow it. That alone is worth every penny. Very cool enclosure BTW. What would the materials cost on that one he wondered outloud.
Reply:All I can add to what has already been said is,,,,,I'M VERY JEALOUS,,,,,myself and my two best friend's which the wife calls the 3 ole'farts could die happy in a place like this,,,,,,,
Reply:Very good job, I am jealous and very envious of the job you did. Also like the carport addition
Reply:Very similar to what I am going to start before the end of summer, sans loft.  Looks very well done.Lots of toys.
Reply:Beautiful work on both projects there Harv.I'd be very interested in that forkavator idea (I might have a future use for a similar setup ), if you could post a few details as you go on with it.Cheers, Loopy.
Reply:I also could "Die happy" in a shop like that! Man, I would have runnin water and sewer out there, and NEVER have to go into the house,,!!!That whole idea rocks! The carport storage, had to be pricey, is that stainless? OR aluminum? Looks to be stainless shelving,, and subject to some weather out there...right? Just wondering.
