Hello. I am in welding classes. One of the classes is a welding codes class. We do not have a welding codes book. We were told by our instructor that we would not have to buy one, and that we could find all needed information on the internet. Well, for the most part, he was right. However, I am having trouble finding out which specific part of the AWS code I should reference on a Welding Procedure Specification, which is part of my current assignment. The weldment will be 2 8" lengths of 1/8" steel strap, butt welded, fillets on both sides of the joint, GMAW. They will be bend tested. So, can anyone tell me which part of the AWS code I should reference on the WPS?Thanks.

Reply:Aaargh! My terminology may be slightly askew. I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Observe my moniker...says it all. Anyways, it's 'b' I'm on about:Anyways, I've welded v-grooves in 1/2" plate before with MIG, but never done fillets with MIG. Have done fillets with Stick, TIG, and flux core, and wouldn't weld both sides with those processes, as there didn't appear to be a need. But with MIG...I don't know. It always seems like I'm working with a hot glue gun rather than welding, and I am always paranoid that I'm not getting enough penetration, even though my joints never break when bent. But I guess I will weld only on one side with MIG, too. Do you know which section of the code I should reference on my sheet?Last edited by BooRadley; 06-28-2010 at 11:27 PM.
Reply:If you're referring to the AWS D1.1, check chapter 3 Prequalification. There's a section filled with prequalified joints and allowable processes.Though if you're using short circuit GMAW, that's never prequalified. You'll have to qualify by testing, or use a spray arc transfer.CWI, CWE, CST for Miller, Lincoln, Thermadyne, Hypertherm & ESABMillermatic 350PLincoln Invertec 205 AC/DCVictor combo torchESAB PCM 1125 |
