hey guys about to pick up (order) a top for a welding bench.it will be 1200mm x 600mm x 10mmor 47inch x 23inch x .35 inch in your speakhowever what would it WEIGH?im going to pick it up on the ute and the supplier will place it on it but need to know if two people would be able to lift it (strong men haha) and yeaany and all help is awesome cheers
Reply:Two men wouldn't be a bad idea.  I'd prolly move it by myself, but it would be tough. My name's not Jim....
Reply:115 lbs, 53kg based on 15.31 lbs per sq. ft......Mike
Reply:I remember a few useful facts that allow me to calculate the weight of just about anything.1 - 1 cubic foot of water weighs 62.4 lbs2 - 1 inch = 25.4 mm3 - Relative density of steel = 7.85 compared to density of water = 1Example:How much will a 1200mm x 600mm x 10mm steel plate weigh?Step 1 Convert mm to feet:   1200 mm becomes 1200mm / 25.4 mm/inch / 12 inch/ft = 3.937 ft    600 mm is half of that = 1.9685 ft    10 mm is 10 / 25.4 / 12 = 0.0328 ftStep 2 Calculate volume in cubic feetVolume = length x width x thickness = 3.937 ft x 1.9685 ft x 0.0328 ft = 0.2543 cubic feetStep 3 Calculate the weightRecall 1 cubic foot of water weighs 62.4 lbs.  Here we have 0.2543 cubic feet that would weigh 62.4 lbs x 0.2543 = 15.8662 lbsBut our plate is made of steel, not water, so we have to multiply by the density difference.e.g. steel is 7.85 times as heavy as water. So the weight of the steel plate is 15.8662 x 7.85 = 124.5 lbsMemorize 1 inch = 25.4 mm, 1 cubic foot of water = 62.4 lbs, density of steel = 7.85 and you can do a lot!Example - Neighbour wanted to move his light-weight metal shed. However, the concrete slab under the shed was 4 inches thick and 6 feet long by 4 feet wide.Could we move this concrete slab with a 2,000 lbs capacity come-a-long?The key question was -  did the concrete slab weigh?Calculation...Volume of slab in cubic feet = 4 inches / 12 inches/ft x 6 ft x 4 ft = 8 cubic feetRecall 1 cubic foot of water weighs 62.4 lbs... So 8 cubic feet of water would weigh = 62.4 x 8 = 499 lbs, but the slab is concrete not water.  The density of concrete is somewhere between water (1) and steel (7.85), guess about 4.5.So the weight of the concrete slab would be about 4.5 x 499 lbs = 2,246 lbs.Since we were not lifting the 2,246 lb concrete slab but only sliding it along the ground, the 2,000 lbs capacity come-a-long worked just fine.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:thanks heaps guys and thanks for the formula rick. ill ensure to implement it in the future. Funny here im sitting on Uni holidays having just finished a semester of statistics and here you pumping formulas back into my head hahaha
Reply:Hi, My bench was the same thickness and width but a smidge longer at 1.5mt and I could unload it on my own off my trailer, but it took some doing, I couldn't lift it all up on my own as it is long and awkward, it was a case of stick one end up on some thing then maneuver it up and around, two men shouldn't have any problems.Miller Auto Invision 456 + S-62 wire feederC6240B1 Gap bed lathe16 ft3 air compressor16 speed pedestal drillHafco BS-912 Bandsaw
Reply:If I had to "eyeball" the plate's weight, I'd quickly calculate this roughly as 100 (104) lbs.By using: Base weight of plate at 40 lbs. per square foot at one inch thick.40 divided by 3, for approximately 13 lbs per square foot at .35"So:4' (rounded up) x 2' (rounded up) x 13 (rounded down) = 104Sometimes I use .25 per cubic inch, and add 10% if it's critical.Carbide voids all weight guesstimates.  Good Luck
Reply:Density of steel = 0.283 lb / in347 x 23 x 0.35 x 0.283 = 107 lbbtw, 10 mm is actually = 0.3937 inch or in most usage = 0.40 inch47 x 23 x 0.40 x 0.283 = 122 lbEither way, it's probably a two moderately strong guy type of job.  Moving a 4ft x 2 ft 100+ lb steel plate is NOT easy by yourself.  Sometimes do-able, but not easy.want to think metric?  Steel is 8 g/cm3 (exact alloy composition may cause that number to vary slightly).So 120 cm x 60 cm x 1 cm x 8 g/cm3 = 57,600 g = 57.6 kg  The best laid schemes ... Reply:My cryin eyes, what is this world coming to?....4'x2'x3/8"???........snatch it out of the truck and carry it under one arm, I would....jeez
Reply:Once I converted it to inches I had a laugh.  A 4x2 piece of 3/8?  Hell, if your any kind of man pick it up and go.Have we all gone mad?
