Funky Two Step Journal Repair..

Have 2 Rubber covered rollers to repair..I could'nt get the end too hot so the rubber would melt..Hmmmmmm.......What to do....Here's the worn shaft..Here's the bearing thats going back on..Thats way too much to fill with weld..So here's what we're gonna do..Just weld as "normal" and make it all nice nice..Put it in the lathe and turn the new bushing step..OK...Now I have to go down front and make a bushing..Back in a few.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I hate the other lathes... After 20 min. heres the new bushing...005 shrink fit so heat it up!!Now heres a little trick for you..The bearing landing is .900 wide..So make the bushing .700 wide..Install in the middle of the landing...And now you have .100 to fill in on each side so when you finish turn it you won't turn all the weld off..Now weld it...Now finish it!The new bearing surface is .0015 bigger so the bearing will "tap" on with a light hammer...I gave the journal where the key is the "once over" with the welder just so I know everything runs true after..And we do not have to re-cut the key either..I get all the fun jobs...(And this only took 2 posts......)...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:This kind of rings a bell.  I remember reading about sleeving journals that could not be welded up as usual because of some reason I can't remember (something to do with how they were heat treated maybe?).Anyway, shear genius as usual. Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.
