Well,  I actually got some work off of this forum.  I went and met Garrett (Mudbuddy) on here, and picked up his bought.  Quite a nice guy i might add.  Got all the details from him and told him I would post some pics of the progress next week as I go so he can keep up with what's going on.  Well had sometime this afternoon, and thought I would post the before pics.Last edited by MicroZone; 06-24-2007 at 10:35 PM.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Headed out now to get it in the shop and get ready for in the morning.  Never cut up a perfectly good boat before  but there's a first time for everything.  I'm gonna cut his rear bench into two separate side seats, and install a sheet for a floor over the welded in supports.  I told him I was letting him have the welding web special so any recommendations, comments, or advise is appreciated.   ~JacksonLast edited by Hammack_Welding; 06-24-2007 at 12:54 PM.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:that's exactly what i did to my boat cut the back bench into 2 storage pods put in diamond plate floor  and put the gas tank under the front deck lemme know if i can be any help our boats are pretty smiler350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:one quick tip that rear bench acts as a big rib for support it will  probably have a half rib under it so you may need to tie it all together to keep the support 350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off

Reply:lets see some pics of the progress!those will be some long weldsMy Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:I plan on doing all the welding with my tig.  I thought about the water needing a place to drain, but the way the hull is made it is plenty of room underneath the ribs to let water drain down the chines that are bent into the hull.  The seat,  I was planning on cutting out the middle section, and then tie the end plates all the way down to the ribs and then put the floor in.  I think that will support the ends of the seat and the sides pretty well.  Maybe beef up the ribs under the seat if I feel it needs it once the seats are cut and capped.    The floor needs to be 51" wide to notch around the ribs and reach all the way to the sides, so I am probably install it in two pieces since i can't get a hold of a 5ft wide sheet of AL around here.  I did get the boat in the shop, and got it marked ready to cut tomorrow.  I've got to finish this thing this week.  It'll give me a reason to take next weekend off and go to the condo at the beach.  I mean after all I have to deliver it, and I can't help that Garrett lives at the beach where my best friends condo is located.  hehehe..........    ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Originally Posted by SandyJiss don't make no sense.  Gotta be the American way, I guess.  As a cautionary note, most of the false floor additions end up being a trash trap, sometimes even to the point of blocking the water flow from front to rear. (Yeppers, these boats do get water in there quite often) (Mud and crud too, not to mention split shot sinkers, hooks amd lots of what-not)Some thought might be given on how to make it where it could be hosed out easily, or, tight enough to keep the crud out.????
Reply:umahunter, I see you didn't carry your floor all the way to the sides.  I would think fishing tackle or shotgun shells, etc... would find an easy path under the floor like that.  I am planning on notching the sheet to fit around the ribs and butt to the sides.  One other reason I want to do that is Garrett mentioned having his dog in the boat at times and I would be afraid a dog's foot might get hung in there on the way out of the boat.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:my floor has flotation foam under the floor and has al caps between each rib so water drains down the sides it also act as a good catch all for shells etc i don't think you would have to worry about the dogs my lab is with me hunting all winter and has never had a problem and in the summer i usually have 3 dogs on board if your going to remove all the foam from the back bench you need to replace it somewhere so if you get swamped you don't totally sink which is good in a duck boat since duck hunter are usually out in bad weather plus the foam helps support the floor and cuts down noise  ask just about any ducker who's done it and they'll tell you to add foam and  if not its gonna be creaking and flexing quite a bit if you put foam under the floor make sure its the blue or pink NOT white it  will act like a sponge also i don't know how you plan on cutting into the bench but the foam inside if lit on fire gives off very deadly  fumes oh man are you in for some fun getting out the foam here's a peak of what it will look like have fun Last edited by umahunter; 06-24-2007 at 08:13 PM.350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:Already thought of the foam in the seat.  All the cutting I do will bein the seat and with a saw.  I was planning on sawing thru the aluminum with a sawzall, and then take a hand saw and run down the cut to get thru the foam.  I don't think it will be too bad....I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:sounds cool  are you going to just split it then seal it up or are you going to make storage in each of the boxs? the biggest problem i had with mine was the foam was spray in so it was adhered to all the surfaces i sawed and pryed most of it but all the rest i did  using a wire wheel on a grinder with a shop vac it can make a mess but its fast 350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:Met Jackson up in Donalsonville to drop off my boat...Great guy who drove about an hour to come pick it up to make it easier on me.....Did I mention he is a Georgia Bulldog fan...that says it all right there....Go Dawgs!!!Hey Jackson,Good to hear it will be getting under way today. Look forward to seeing more pics of the progress.  Not real worried about losing the floatation as I don't think it would help that much with the weight of the mudbuddy on the back and all of my duck hunting gear if I got swamped....It's insured Also, I was just going to throw this out there...those ribs slant upwards at the front deck pretty bad. We tried Plywood one time for a floor and just couldn't get it to work right...it being so slanted...don't know if that helps at all but just sharing some info.To answer some of your questions I asked Jackson if he could split the bench seat for me,  move the seat pedestal for me to one of the pods,  and then cut a hole for a hatch on the other pod where I am going to store my battery and rig up some lights and a rocker panel. Those ribs were a pain for my dog and me trying to walk around while hunting...can't wait to get the AL floor.Umahunter, that is a good looking boat you got there. Is that a go-devil on the back? Thanks for all the tips....those pods look good and once mine is done my motor will be alot easier to drive and pop out of the water.
Reply:As far as getting rid of the noise and vibration...here is what I am thinking. I'm going to order some hydroturf which does not absorb any water and is very similar to truck matting...should help alot with dampening the noise. Going to cut it to fit the deck and the floorhttp://hydroturf.com/products.php?ca...man=Hydro-Turf
Reply:Hey there, I wondered when you would be popping in.  I have been running repairs this morning, but I as soon as I finish this sandwich I am headed out to saw up your boat. I put some pics up tonight of what it looks like after the demolition.  Catch ya'll later.  ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Hey bud....Can't wait to see em'....take it easy on the ol girl
Reply:that's a modded hd sport on the back of my rig it started as a 29 b&S now its somewhere around 40 something then pics of my split bench are on the mud buddy forum under split bench you'll love having a floor i remember riding on ribs that sucked you should be able to make some good storage out of those i put a hatch on each of mine with a 12x12 opening here's a couple of my driverside hatch i had to modify some cheapie hinges since i couldn't get an al ones in town anyway seat base on the pod is sweet on the long trips i kickback with my feet up on the side 350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:Saw your pics on the mudbuddy site...looks good and I like what you did with the battery compartment up front. Looks good  Think mine will turn out very similar.....Will make it alot better when hunting and for storage of all my gear!! Thanks for your input and keep it rollin"A bad day in the marsh beats a good day at work."
Reply:thanks  having the boxes will definitely be nicer than straddling the bench have ya caught any air in that boat yet ?350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:Haven't caught any air yet but have put it through some serious mud....Alot of people told me I would have trouble getting on plane with a 14ft boat...But with me, my brother, our two labs and gear I have been avging about 21-22 mph...."A bad day in the marsh beats a good day at work."
Reply:by the way umahunter what kind of boat is that...it looks pretty similar to mine."A bad day in the marsh beats a good day at work."
Reply:ok, here are some pics of the prgoress.  cut the bench and started peeling the aluminum off.Last edited by MicroZone; 06-26-2007 at 02:12 PM.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:How about some foam removal.  This wasn't quite as bad as I expected it to be.Last edited by MicroZone; 06-26-2007 at 02:13 PM.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Well, since I have now screwed up the fellow's boat  I guess I should start putting it back together.   So I did go ahead and start cutting the back half of the floor, and get it put in to check it for fit.Last edited by MicroZone; 06-26-2007 at 02:14 PM.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......My part time helper is coming in this afternoon.  I'll have him cut the ends to cap the seats, the front sheet for the floor, and some various pieces for braces, and to fill the gaps down the side.  hopefully we will be welding tommorrow.  Garrett, Let me know what ya think.  I moved the pedestal over and cut the two light holes in the front.  You should be able to see them in one of the pics.It was 97 degrees here yesterday.  I couldn't help thinking I need to be in this thing fishing with a 12 pack instead of laying in it sweating my tail off. lol     Got repairs to run this afternoon so I'll catch ya'll tonight.  ~jacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Jackson I am lovin it....Did you take the foam out of both seats?? That will give me some great storage!!! Lovin the diamond plating too...that is going to be great for a non skid surface...  ...keep it rolling man...can't wait to see more pics!!!! I hear ya on the fishin and drinkin'....it was a scorcher here in PC as well.Last edited by muddydawg; 06-26-2007 at 12:24 PM."A bad day in the marsh beats a good day at work."
Reply:Ok this is a pretty stupid question coming from a guy that doesn’t own a duck boat; but how are you going to drive the boat without that midsection? I guess you are going to be sitting on one of the hatches towards the side but doesn’t that get uncomfortable especially on long trips? What about some type of small fold-away seat used in bass boats? Sitting off centered sure does make your neck and back cramp up trying to keep your face forward.
Reply:Originally Posted by muddydawgby the way umahunter what kind of boat is that...it looks pretty similar to mine.
Reply:When you are driving the type of motor I have it has a long drive shaft to steer with and when I marked where the cuts are I took this into account it is alot easier on your back and arms to drive it from the side like this instead of facing forward all the time and reaching behind you...here is an example....it is alot easier to drive this way...plus I stand up alot when driving to look for stumps and underwater obstructions..."A bad day in the marsh beats a good day at work."
Reply:Umahunter...where do you get your pods from? Do they slow you down at all? Do they obstruct your turning radius at all?"A bad day in the marsh beats a good day at work."
Reply:i got mine from beavertail 325 to my door just call them up there vary helpful as long as you get the right size it shouldn't affect turning they add 200 lbs of flotation they keep your but up in skinny water so your not bumping bottom they shouldn't slow you down since they add more planeing surface they should speed you up whats your speed in that boat solo are you running the new big blade prop? anyway here's a pic of mine after they got put on this is when i had a longtail my boat is 52 wide so i have the large ones you would probably need the smaller size  not much different they sure make it easy to whiz off the back of the boat350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off

Reply:You boys keep playin with those mud buddies.  I can get to where I am going with a 40 Yamaha and have a limit on the water by the time y'all get to the hole.  .......and a lot quieter too
Reply:That's a sweet setup there usmcgremlin...where do you do most of your huntin at?? I like those dual motors....That boat looks similar to the gatortrax boats....I like it I hear that alot from the guys that I hunt with at Lake Seminole Pookie, but it all depends on where you hunt...Out on Lake Seminole there is so much Hydrilla I can beat any outboard to any decent hunting spot, get the dekes out, and sit there listening to those guys strugglin with the outboards and cleaning the grass off there props   One squeeze and your hooked"A bad day in the marsh beats a good day at work."

Reply:Uma, Quick question,  How did you clean your aluminum seams to weld them?  This is the toughest paint I have ever run into.  It has to be some type of etching compound or something.  I tried a stainless wire wheel,  then a flap disk, and finally an aluminum grinding wheel.  followed by acetone and a good brushing.  even then i still ran into spots it seemed to be contaminated.  I did get the ends of the bench I capped welded over today and got started cutting out the sheet for the front portion of the floor.  I have a meeting tonight, but I will try to get the pics posted in the morning of the progress.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:muddydawg: i hunt in the atchafalaya basin in south Louisiana the poor guys in outboards cant even get anywhere close to where i hunt. solid mud flat for 3/4 of a mile the guys in the air boats cant even get there because they are too tall.  i love my prodrive. tillerhandle style setups cant beat the hell out of u i sit back and drive. i wish i had some pics of the mud flat ill get some this season. heres one when we were scouting/ preseason. Reply:Well I finally got the painted seams cleaned and welded. Still have a few more welds, but will be on new clean aluminum.  Here are a few more pics.  this one is of the left side seat capped off, and hole for the storage compartment cut in the top. Still have to cut the hole for the switch panel. Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I tried getting pics of the welds, but the flash works all the time and it flashes off of the aluminum and messes up the pics.  What do you expect for a $30 digital camera.   Here is one of the floor after notching around the ribs, and screwing down. Since Garrett is going to repaint the boat I went ahead and put a bead of marine sealer around the edge of the floor to help keep trash from getting under it. Reply:Yeah we don't have too many mud flats where I am at. Wish we did...I run mostly rocky rivers and water that is really thick with grass and vegetation....just can't get there in a outboard"A bad day in the marsh beats a good day at work."
Reply:Well, going down to the beach today to deliver Muddydawgs boat, and have a day or two of vacation.  Here is how it turned out. Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
