I posted some pictures of the shipyard the other day as well as my 'hole' that I 'live' in while at work. And someone asked to see the welds up close so on my break I grabbed my camera and got a few pictures. Not the best welds as far as appearance goes, but they are watertight and pass the xray test with flying colors. These welds aren't visible to the public, this is inside of a fuel/oil tank so they are thrown up quick. Got to burn 25lbs of 1/16" wire a day, efficency is key! I'll get some pictures of the publically visible welds later, i've been stuck in this tank for so long now... Some flat work on a watertight bulkhead(rusty vert weld wasn't mine)An overhead weld wrapping some curved steel tying into another weld on the other side.A vertical weld on a support brace. As you can see all welds are fully wrapped to prevent cracking and to keep them watertight so there is no red rust dripping into the fuel tank. This is how dual-shield slag peels off of the weld for those of you who haven't used it before. Makes cleanup a breeze. I don't ever chip my overhead welds, once the end of the weld turns from glowing red to black the slag falls right off. This steel is treated with a galvanized primer to prevent rust to prevent having to prep the steel before welding. You can see the greenish stuff on the top of the weld. This is the galvanized primer that boiled off the base metal. Wire brush takes it right off and makes the weld shine.(Once again, rusty vert weld wasn't mine)
Reply:Those are very nice welds. What brand of wire are you using?
Reply:Oh ya, and it was a LOOOOONG day today. I was chipping some slag off a vertical weld that was above my head and somehow a piece of HOT slag dodged my safety glasses and flew into my eyeball. I washed with a bottle of water then the eyewash station with no luck. The company sent me to the doctor where he numbed me and took a 1/16" x 1/16" piece of slag out of my eye. It burned itself INTO my eyeball, scratched it up and burned the inside of my eyelid with 3rd degree burns. The doctor then whipped out a strange looking device that I found out was a friggin' eyeball drill which he stuck in my eye and drilled out the burned tissue and slag/metal fragments. Now I have some antibiotics and vicodin to help me recover. I tried finishing the day and only got another 4 hours before I called it quits and went home 1.5hrs early because of the pain. Plus I couldn't even see my puddle. My eye doesn't even work anymore.

Reply:btw those watertight bulkheads have a 6010 root pass to seal them then followed by a pass of dual-shield. To check them to see if they are watertight we spray a soapy mixture onto one side and blast highly compressed air onto the other side and someone checks for bubbles. Any bubbles and the whole section of weld is grinded or air-arc'd out and redone. Real important cause it keeps fuel/oil from leaking into the ocean or in case a ship hits land or an iceburg it keeps the leaking water into a small section of the hull instead of filling of the entire boat.
Reply:You get all the fun jobs.. As far as the eye goes.. You'll heal....... ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Welding on Vicodin, huh? That has to be an interesting experience. I tried to take a midterm in my automation class while on it. Let's just say I was more interested in the birds and clouds outside than I was the test. I actually got my best score of the year, too. Your hand was probably really steady.

Reply:Nice welds, and sorry to hear about the eye! Don't worry though, the eye heals itself remarkably fast. Most of the pain you're feeling is probably the eyelid itself.

Reply:Good luck with the eye. It will heal. Had something like 11 (8? I don't remember) stitches a number of years ago to sew the cornea back on. I felt the stitches for MONTHS after they were pulled out before the scars set flat. Can still see the scar around the eye and a few of the stitch points. I learned not to hang aroud that kind of bar anymore

Reply:When i go hikeing i bring a "camel back" hydration system. instead of filling it with water, i fill it will ice cubes :cold . stays cold for a LONG time. at Costco, they are only $20, DONT GET THEM AT DICKS SPORTING GOOD OR REI. THEY ARE WAY OVER PRICED. get one, and youll cry with joy next time you weld in that pit
Reply:I used to have a camel back for hiking and fishing. They are cool but wouldn't work for me. I have to crawl in too many tight places and there are way too many sparks, the thing would melt or catch fire.

Reply:Btw, I looked at the brand name of the wire and forgot. But I do remember that it started with an 'S' and had a '-arc' at the end. or ' arc'. I will remember if I saw the name again. I will check again tomorrow and try to remember this time.

Reply:Been there, no fun. I'm glad you are healing well!I was grinding with safety glasses, no face shield , when I took a riccoche off my face and glasses into an eye. Reply:Welderboy, glad your healing up. Please keep the welds at the shipyard pics coming. Maybe some bigger pics, more than just the welds. Can you do that?I sure miss an old boy who used to talk about his work during WWII, building Liberty ships at the Kaiser yards.
Reply:Originally Posted by maxyedorSeems like they should aim for tighter fit-ups on a boat, I had to use 2 passes to fill a gap the other day and the gap was HUGE, can't imagine using 17.
Reply:[QUOTE= The doctor then whipped out a strange looking device that I found out was a friggin' eyeball drill which he stuck in my eye and drilled out the burned tissue and slag/metal fragments.[/QUOTE]Me too!! I had some rust rings in my eye. It was really hard to keep still when the doc was coming in for the kill(drill). You would think a guy that gets that close to your face should be acutely familiar with some Listerine but noooo.
Reply:OK, I'm the party pooper here. No rust rings for me.Buy a dozen of these. A couple bucks each. Reply:I wear safety glasses all day every day. The slag got around them.
Reply:Safety glasses are good, but not perfect...... ALWAYS WEAR THEM!!! but I have seen lots of times when working in confined spaces that the sparks bounce off things and fly in from the top, side, or even behind you. Sometime crap happens no matter how ya guard against it.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
