Hi, I've got a friend who needs some one inch black pipe welded up to support a low pressure gas line. I guess it will all be fitted up, and just needs to be welded. What methods would you suggest? It will be on-site and outside. Thanks.

Reply:Ummm, thread the pipe and put a coupler on it?    The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:I'd been told that OAW would probably be the most practical way to weld it. After all, the welds are so small and only one pass I don't really see the advantage of stick welding it...
Reply:You kind of answered your ? . The 2nd ? would be is what are your abilities?

Reply:My skills aren't there. That's part of the reason I asked, I also don't have any equipment. My plumber friend has a few jobs like this every year, and I was figuring as long as I'm learning I might as well learn how to do this job as I have some flexibility in my course of study at school. I think I'll spend some time learning to OFW pipe. I realize that this will take some time, I just want to make sure that any skills I develop or certs I get are practical in the real world and fit the job opportunities that are presented to me.
Reply:I am confused are you learning how to weld or how to be a plumber?  You dont have welding skills, or welding equipment and you want to start out learning how to weld on a pipe that will carry gas?  I am not trying to sound like a dick but this just sounds like a recipe for disaster here.  If your friend is a plumber, he doesn't have any pipe threading equipment?  I thought that was pretty standard equipment for a professional plumber to own.  If he doesn't own the equipment and needs it several times a year, it sounds to me like he should buy a pipe threading setup and be done with it.  He should probably just pick up a manual ratchet threader set for $400 and be prepared for future projects. If you dont have any equipment and you plan on buying it for this job and future projects, what is your budget?  With more info I think people can help you a lot better.
Reply:little stuff like this is where them 110 fluxcore machines are the cats a$$. if you have access to one of them thats what i would use. if not stick it or OAW. really anything will work, its only a support
Reply:If you would have provide this info in your OP it would have been more helpful in answer you.  Originally Posted by insternoMy skills aren't there. Reply:I reread your post and this is to weld a support for a gas pipe not for the gas pipe istself.  If that is the case then just use stick.
Reply:If you're looking for welding things pertinent to pipe supports and hangers, and you want practical, OFW is NOT the way to go.
Reply:Thanks for all the help, and ideas. I should be ready to try for my LA structural stick certs in the next couple of weeks, I had been debating whether to test AWS, or LA City. Guess I might as well do LA City as it is probably a more marketable cert, even if I have to pass an employer's test LA certs seem to open more doors. I have no interest in being a plumber, only that I have a friend who is one and he needs a welder from time to time to weld gas pipe. I don't think it's just the supports, really I have no idea why he needs it welded he just does and wants to pay good money to have it done which is good enough for me. I only want to make sure it's done right, and done to code. That's the info I guess I was asking for. My welding instructor said it could most practically be done with Oxy, he worked for the gas company for years. I just wanted to bounce that idea of some other knowledgeable welders to see if that was really the way to go, or if he might have just had a bias. Sorry if my post was a little vague, it shows my ignorance as I'm just learning. This is not for welding supports for a gas line, it is welding the gas line in order to handle low pressure gas. Thanks again for all the responses!

Reply:Ummm, dude, there should be a sarcasm alert in that post about a 110V wire-feed welder welding up some gas piping. Not really the right machine for the job and all that. Also, note that the 110-120V wire-feed machines typically only have the voltage to run only certain types and sizes of FCAW wire, which may or may not be applicable to the requirements for welding gas pipelines.  Never mind that the 110-120V machines themselves -usually- do not have the power to properly weld gas pipelines. The 110-120V wire-feed machines have their uses.  Structural or Code/critical welding is usually not within their uses.  I don't think there are too many WPS with a call out of "Voltage=C and WFS=3" or such.  Black iron pipe (A53) FCAW welding usually calls for somthing like a FCAW-S Lincoln Innershield NR-203 wire (E71T-8J or such) or a FCAW-G Lincoln Outershield 70, 70H, 71, 71M or similar (E70T-1 or E71T-1, -9 or such) wire.  Add in California having possible seismic requirements for CVN properties and you are NOT going to do that sort of work with a little 110-120V FCAW machine and some 0.035 E71T-11 wire at 100 amps.  Gas line and plumber usually means just thread the pipe and use the appropriate fitttings and thread dope to connect things. If the gas company is welding some pipe, that is usually on the high-pressure side of things and involves More.  More prep, more certifications, more inspections, more machinery, more dollars. If you are serious, the answer is NO to welding some 1 inch black pipe for a gas line with a little 110-120V wire-feed welder. If you are not serious, then shame on you and us for some wasted time and bandwidth.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Thanks MoonRise, very informative. I really don't know why this 1 inch pipe is being welded instead of threaded put together with fittings... guess that seems odd to me too. I do know that this plumber is no rookie and that it's all being done above board with proper permitting and inspections for a commercial application.

Reply:i would tig a small gas line myself. i was refering to welding a support on a line or for just welding small pipe and tuping that wouldnt carry gas. i have no dont in my mind that i could do it and not worry about it, but for gas carrying lines stick or tig is the only route to go. but like i was saying, i have a lincoln 100hd weldpak. i've used the hell out of it to do small stuff thats in the field or just outside. as lond as you know what your doing and prep everything the way it should be, them 110v machines are very useful. the only reason i got it was because i got one hell of a deal on it and was actually going to sell it, but after i got it a started playing with it i found it was a nice machine and have made alot of money with it. but it does have its limitations and being able to know when and how is the key
Reply:some gas sompanies prefer certain work be gas welded because there are no elelctric currents goinginto a line that has gas in it.
