Had to weld up more journals this A.M...I really have to be extra careful with these ones...The rollers are covered with plastic for protection and the silicone cover underneeth is ground to a really nice finish thats +-.0005Can' get the silicone hot AT ALL!!  This is the bearing surface..Time for the wet rag treatment..Weld as fast as you can to keep the heat down and let the rag do "it's thing" Note the steam..Took 3 mins to do the surface weld and it still got that hot..But behind the rag was nice and cool..Keep that in mind if you come across something that can't get hot...I get all the fun jobs......zap!Last edited by zapster; 08-11-2007 at 09:06 AM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:That's a good tip Zap."All that is required for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing"
Reply:does the rag leave a residue when you take it off?I had to use paper towels a few times, because we hardly ever get jobs like that and we dont really have rags.  The paper towels almost always leave a slight residue, not burnt stuff just kind hard and dry.Maybe someday we can afford shop rags.    Also, what do you use for wire?  Im guessing its stainless?  I used 308 filler on those kinda jobs because its easier to turn down than 304.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:HVAC techs do the wet rag all the time, but I had never heard of or thought of it outside of HVAC work.I've seen several times where the schrader valves on a/c split system units were cooked because the nimrod tech before had not used a wet rag. One service tech we had for about a week cooked a brand new 8 ton compressor in a unit, the old compressor was not pumping at all.  The new one never even started once, it was fried when installed by the tech.  Reason why he didn't bother to use a heat sink at all and fried everything inside.  It was kinda cool cutting open a brand new compressor and seeing the guts inside.
Reply:what was the whole reason on welding around the shaft?
Reply:the surface of the shaft gets worn down over time due to one thing or another, and instead of replacing the whole thing you can build it back up with weld and turn it down.At least, thats what im assuming is going on.  Ive done a few of these myself.Have we all gone mad?
