I found some new pictures of a very unique job I worked on this year.  I've posted some pics of it before, but here are some more.  We drove sheet pile into the 3rd largest river on the west coast of the united states and built a coffer dam.  We then pumped out the water and began building a pump station to pump 25,000cfs of water up a mountain into a reservoir.  We were working 20+ feet underneath the river and did a lot of underwater welding to patch leaks and huge gaping holes in the sheet pile. Some of the welding I did on that project was "patching" holes in the sheet pile.  When the sheet pile gets driven down it hits bedrock and buckles on the bottom leaving huge holes for water to flow in.  We would cut out the buckled steel, take a piece of 1/4" plate and brace it onto the hole and weld it as water shot out the top and sides.  This would leave a gap behind the plate.  We would sandbag in front of it to keep most of the water in it then pour concrete into the back of it to seal it up.  When we did this it would open a new hole somewhere else that we had to patch.  We had some record floods this past fall that tore the sheet pile up and set the project back about 10 months.  I was called out to repair the broken coffer dam.  We worked 7 12 hour shifts with fishing waders on because we were chest deep in water.  We had several 10" pumps keeping the place from flooding.  If a circuit breaker tripped or a pump got clogged the place would start rising about one foot every 5 minutes.  We had to unclog the pump or reset the breaker fast or else we had to evacuate. We fit and welded miles of stainless pipe in this project.  All of it TIG welded.Enjoy the pics! I wish I had more to share.Don't ask why this guy wasn't tied off or why the company posted such an unsafe picture on their website...I think that is a picture of a buddy of mine up there cutting off some sheet pile tops.Several times on this job the river got only a couple feet from the top of the sheet pile and would pour into holes cut in the dam that would allow water to flow in and equalize the pressure so it didn't wash away.  Needless to say, we wouldn't work when that happened.Last edited by WelderBoy; 08-14-2007 at 12:27 PM.

Reply:I've had to weld pipes under water pressure with mixed results... What is your trick to that process?Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
