Auto Darkening Hood Question

I got a Jackson Helmet from my LWS shop last week.I turned the sensitivity all the way up and look at a light and it never switches.There is no on/off button on it, and im a little worried about trying to weld with it.My friend has a High dollar helmet and when i look at a light i can see his switch.What do you guys think?

Reply:Did you read all of the instructions? My HF used to switch at a light bulb and so does my new Jackson/Huntsman. If the directions don't help you you might want to call the company. Reply:You say there is no on/off button.  Is it solar?  May need to sit it out in the sun and get a good charge on it before using it.  I think mine suggested a 4 hour charge in the sunlight after taking out of the box.

Reply:Easiest way to test it is grab a piece of scrap metal, get your grinder and your helmet... put helmet on.. start grinder and look at the sparks.  If the sparks trigger it than you know it works.  This is of course unless your helmet has a grinding mode, in which case that must be turned off.Just my  .02

Reply:Model number? My old Lincoln AD you had to press the lens to turn it on. There was nothing on the unit that said this however. All most every good AD will protect your eyes even if off. You may see spots for a bit, but a brief 5 or 6 seconds will not damage your eyes. They are designed that way for when the hood doesn't darken, and lets be honest that happens regularly for any number of reasons. I'm not suggesting you weld that way, only that if you want to strike an arc and be 100% sure it's not going to work, then you will be OK for a brief bit.It isn't something silly like a piece of tape over the sensors is it?.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
