another day another "hey fix that now"       we were chopping corn and one of the custom guys big silage carts goes by looking a little goffy so i run him down and see this big crack the whole way down under and up the other side and it was just hinging on the top of the tube.  tube was 4 x 7 with a 3/8th wall.  good thing i caught him before he got reloaded.  so about an hour later and a 100 bucks off the bill had him going again.       the gap was open about an inch so i put the twenty ton jack behind the crack and jacked away. No air man i was a dumb azz when i bought that.  anyhow used the tractor for weight on the other side and got the gap down to about an 1/8th inch beveled it out threw some heat on it.  sorry farmer here i have no idea how hot i got it   then welded the crack shut the whole way around a little touch up grinding layed my plates on  tacked a touch of heat and welded them on the whole way around.  heres some pics   oh yeah did encounter a nice flame out the back end of the tube when some of the silage gas in the tubing iginited  always make sure you tube has a good opening on it before welding   Attached Imageswww.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:So you preheated it with tack welds?  Did you grind them down flush then weld?
Reply:sorry for the confusion i prehated the crack and welded that shut vertical of couse.  then did some touch up grinding to get the surface flush in preparation to weld the plates on.  tacked the plates in place preheated them and then welded them all around.  the one picture is dirty looking because it was later in the day untill i got that picture.www.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:the pics arent the best i took them with my phone then had to edit the crap out of them to get them to load on the site here.www.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:I was on a custom silage cutting crew 1 summer. Not a day went by that something didn't need welded. Kinda hard to see in the pics but from I could see it looks a lot better than most fix it right now repairs I've seen.
Reply:i try to be a fix it right and right now kinda guy like somebody said one time if you dont have time to fix it right you dont have time to fix it twice.  i have taken any local evening welding classes i can get my hands on and hang out at the welding shop looking at everything evertime i go get supplies.  all that sort of stuff helps but this website has taught me an unbelivable amount not a day goes by i dont look at thiswww.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:i also run this tractor and cart on occasion so i dang sure dont want it to break when i am running it.  out east here we dont get over as much ground as you midwest fellows but we cover it for as screwed up as the ground iswww.burdettenetworks.com
