Generator to welder? Can a regular generator be converted to a welder?

I have a Coleman Power mate generator which has a 220 volt outlet and two 115 volt outlets on it. And it is a constant duty cycle generator.Is there a add on to make it a welder is my question? Reply:I would imagine with some doing it could be done.  I reckon that available current would be on the small side though.You'd need access to the field circuit, to make the output variable.  And access to the output to rectify it, of course you could use a/c.The other problem I see is the open circuit voltage... 115 volts.  ( You'd want to parallel the outputs to double the current. )  I can't imagine that'd be very safe.Of course to answer your question correctly, YES there is an add-on to make it a welder.  A welder.  Just plug it in.

Reply:Thank you Slamdvw and Dda52.I thought as much. Your input gives me the perfect reason to get a Tig machine,as the wife was the reason for asking. Reply:Gotta start somewhere.  Ebay can be your friend when it comes to finding stuff.  If you're not looking to do Aluminum, Miller Maxstars get a great price.  While I'm partial to blue machines, there are others that are just as good, if not better.
Reply:I can think of another way to do it.There is an alternator that a lot of guys in the JEEP world install. It looks to me like a modified chevy style alternator. I suppose you could drive it with a belt off of the generator itself if it was the only load on the motor. I wouldn't imagine trying to use the generator function AND the alternator. But given a choice....I would run a welder plugged into the generator.
