i need advice

I want to become a pipeline welder. I work for a welding company that only works in petroleum terminals. I have been burning rods like crazy and im gettin good. I need some advice on how i can get a better education. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Reply:if you want to be a pipe welder, pratice you *** of with 6010 and 7018 stick, or SMAW and TIG on a 6G on sched 80 2" pipe. this seems to be the norm for pipeing in chemical and other process plants. i just had to take an xray of stick, and er80s wire and er309 ss wire. all 2" 80 6G. the only thing to really watch for is fisheyes in the stainless. you have to washout on the side when you break the arc or you will get one, and its an automatic fail. some companies will let you fix it if you can, but not the one i tested for. they let it be known right from the start. as far as petro piping, i'm really not too sure what they run or how they test. if thats what your looking at i'm sure you can find some info on here someplace. hope this helps. good luck
Reply:Bend test your carbon coupons (you can make a hydraulic jack-powered bend tester). We train our students on 6" Schedule 40 carbon, 2" Schedule 80 carbon, and 2" Schedule 10 stainless for test purposes as well as other pipe and fittings. If you can scrounge some old fittings, do socket welds too.
