i dont for one moment claim to be a tig hand, where possible i try to avoid itbut the nature of my job dictates its use from time to time.heres the way i go about doing a 2ins mild steel butt.pic1 bridge tacks, these leave the root gap untouched.pic2 notice slight concave look to this run the filler metal must be going somewhere inside hopefully.pic3 i personally like to grind the root any porosity will show much clearer and it gives a slick surface for the cap.pic4 cap, this is just my method larger pipe will require a larger gap.the power was between 90 and 100 amps gap 12 gauge.slight misalignment my fault not for production.pipefitterLast edited by ZTFab; 06-28-2007 at 01:06 AM.
Reply:As always nice welding, pipefitter.  Most of the pipe I work with is 6" or 8" .120 wall used in agricultural irrigations.  Usually runs about a 120psi max, and I usually only run two passes run on it, but its not quite as critical as the pipe you deal with.  Sometimes I will weld it with the tig just to keep in practice, and I do it just the same way you did there.  I always enjoy seeing your work.  ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:thanks jackson,i appreciate you taking a look.heres a cut out of that butt ,the fitter i work with didnt have the correct size tank cutter so there was too large a gap for stick, thats the beauty of tig.did this flange with 2 runs 2.5 filler 90 amps.alan.Last edited by ZTFab; 06-28-2007 at 01:08 AM.

Reply:Always is nice to see good examples of good work.  Look for the portrait option on your camera, it will allow you to take pictures up close and still have excellent focus.  Sometimes its a picture of a flower or can be called telemacro on Sony cameras. Anyways depending on your zoom or magnifier will dictate how close you can be to an object to photo. The higher the optical zoom the further you have to be from the subject.  Portrait of telephoto allows you to cut this distance in half.  For the racing handlebars on one of my drag sleds ( 3/4"- 7/8" tubing 4130) do I have to leave a gap ? And is the cap pass required?  Sled runs 8.7's at 150+ mph in the quater.  I haven't done this on the other 2 I did this year. Just beveled 1st pas and filler.   TIA500 AMP AIRCO TIG LINCOLN PT185 100% DC @ 128 AMP-WTFSPEED GLASS 9002X MILLER THUNDERBOLT 225HOBBIEST TURNED WELDING JUNKIE8 2ND FIRECAT - SNOWMOBILE RACE CHASSIS FABRICATORPRIDE IS WHAT MAKES YOUR WORK SO GOOD

Reply:thanks again lads.heres how i tackle a 3 inch butt, look in the first run for a concave look.as you have been adding filler at a steady speed the metal must be going into  the inside,i clean the lot to check for porosity, and this helps the cap flow slick as snot. pipefitter[ATTACH]12538[/ATTACH Attached ImagesLast edited by pipe fitter; 09-12-2007 at 05:31 PM.
