Welding Mild steel to cast iron

They came up with a project for me at work. They want me to weld square tubing to the top section of a fire hydrant to flush hydrants basiclly the piece would mount to the hitch on the back of the truck and we can flush hydrants without spraying water across two lanes of traffic. Reply:Steelwill, What ever you weld it with you will want the weld to give some. With mig I would use mild steel wire. With stick I'v used stainless or nickel rod. There may be more or better options. Just my 2 pennies worth. They checked the fire system where I work and sprayed it across the road like you mentioned. Problem was mid winter in Michigan they made an Ice rink out of the road.
Reply:I would make sure its cast iron.  If it is, you need nickel rod.  Spark test.... No or little orange sparks = cast Iron.  Big yellow sparks = cast steel.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:You can weld mild to cast with 7018..But it will not put up with much abuse.. If the piece is gonna be "stressed" in any way then like Daver R stated..Get the nickle rod and spare yourself the embarrasment of turning more roads into skating rinks this winter......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:your picture is hard to make out........but if you are looking for something to flush fire hydrants with go to hosemonster.com and make one. if you are just flushing you will not need th pitot tube. i have made several of them and they work great, even with flows in the 1200 gpm range the hose monster will just lay still on the ground. i am a fire sprinkler contractor and use on on a weekly basis.G3
