We've got a funny place. Sort of 3 seperate buildings in an older suburb about 7klms from the city centre.I do most of my messy stuffy outside in the backyard, and I thought it was time I built some sort of shelter to keep the sun and rain off whatever I'm doing. The building with the dark tin roof was a stable (1895). It's now my shed. I built another roof/awning extension off it.I didn't want it to dominate the yard, so I:- Used translucent roof sheeting.- Painted it all white- Set the post about 4 feet along from the corner i.e. made a cantilever. (For the post, I used 2 lengths of 40mm angle welded in an X. I did this to make the post unobtrusive.)- Used 75 x 40mm channel on edge around the perimeter (rather than a bulky timber beam). I made up and welded some brackets on the channel to bolt the timber beams to.The whole thing sort of 'floats'.The undercover area is about 6m x 3.5m.The day I finished the framing, I looked at it and thought: 'hmmm. Bugger. That's pretty high. Higher than I thought it would be. Rain will blow right in there. I need some sort of roll down weather protection.' The very next day I was driving somewhere and found on the street that canvass blind that someone had tossed out.Next job is to replace the sliding steel gates. They're about 4 metres wide each and too low. I need to make them higher to give more weather protection - and stop rubber necks.Scott Attached Images
Reply:Hey, that looks pretty dern good. I bet it's nice having an covered exterior area to work under.
Reply:Well at least you won't be hitting your head on anything... ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Yep, it's good being able to work outside under cover. I think that sheeting blocks about 50% of the UV rays. Summer is when I'm more inclined to do work out there - winter it's too cold out in the backyard because it's the south side of the property. The best thing about the roof is that it will mean I can leave unfinished things out there and they won't get rained on - not that it rains much anymore. I do need to get a rainwater tank now, though, to capture any rain that does fall on that roof for the vegie garden. And no, I won't be hitting my head - unless I hang things from it?Total cost was about AU$800 (around USD$1,000).

Reply:I think the green stuff is cheaper, too, but it's such a wierd light under it. I think it would do my head in.
Reply:Scott, $800Aus is  $664US, I'm not sure how hot it gets in Sydney but I find the clear sheeting gets too hot up here in NW WA, we are into the 40oC days already, I have it over my pool and I'm going to replace it with iron.Clive
Reply:Oops. Yes the AUD/USD conversion is the other way round. In Sydney we get maybe 20 days per summer over 40. Mostly it's high 30s.I reckon the tin roofing gets much hotter.
Reply:The reflective roofing iron works well but the killer is the light still warms up when you don't want it to.
Reply:Looks good Scott, Just watch the sparks on the blind, It will be a great spot to let your creative juices flow.SimonLabel EverythingMetal Fabrication - Welding Repairs - Wrought Iron - Sign Writing - Custom Decals.
