car hauler

I just started on a car hauler this morning around 10:30.  The I-beam was to big for the chop saw so everything was cut with the torch.  I had it rolling at 6pm.  I'll try to get some pics tomorrow, it's to dark now.  It's built out of 8 x 10 I-beam.  It's 16' 4" x 78 1/2".  It turned out about 21" tall, I was gonna put on a dovetail but I don't think I really need it.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Dovetails sure are nice when loading and unloading, what size axles did you put under it?  I've seen HD equipment trailers that were'nt even 8x10 I-beam.

Reply:Ok folks sorry for the delay.  My wife and I were up all night with a sick baby throwing up every 20 minutes.  She threw up blood this morning so we took her to the ER.  Everything's fine now, she's crawling around everywhere now.  Ok so here's the pics, keep in mind this is going to be a work in progress and it's nowhere near finished.  I still got to block up the equalizer hanger cause the shackles are on the frame and it don't any room to move.And I don't even have crossmembers in yet  It's not going anywhere thoughDewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:Looks like you could use another axle to take advantage of that things structural capabilities. Are you going to gusset or box the tounge to frame locations ? Everythings deadended on the front plate, that'll be your weak spot.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT

Reply:You shouldl have put bigger axles on it, with 3500 lbs. axles on that trailer you can say your weakest spot will be the axles.So how well does it pull?
Reply:They move portable buildings with steel trailers built of stuff like that. Axle choice is wide open, 2 are ok, 3 axles- even better. Then you get to pick axle ratings, 2- 5200 pounders is the same as three 3500 pounders, but more stable on the road, and ratings can vary widely, 2k 3.5k, 5k,5.2k, 7k, just a few of many sizes available.City of L.A. Reply:I'm gonna put several gussets in the tongue area to stiffen it up.  I used 3500# axles cause I already had them there at the shop.  They need some new seals and tires but should be fine otherwise.  I've only pulled it from the shop to the driveway which is not far and off-road so I don't know how it's gonna pull yet.  It's not really that heavy only around 1200# so far counting the axles.The dovetail is where you angle the back few feet of the trailer downward and I decided that I don't need it.  I was thinking another 2' for the dovetail but if I build some 5' ramps it should be fine.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:Now that's the start of a trailer!   And free I-beam to boot?   Gussets, cross-rails, decking, ramps, attach axles, wiring, painting, custom lettering inside the side-rails proclaiming that this was custom made with pride by LittleFuzz for LittleFuzz, ...Oh, and since this -IS- WeldingWeb and not just LookAtWhatI-MadeWeb, where are the close-up pics of some of the welds?  With the coin, for a sense of scale and all.   Sorry to hear about the little one being sick.  Throwing up all night long is no fun for kid or parents.  Throwing up blood is -never- a good sign.   note to Sandy in Californ-I-ay,  That's a trailer.  Not piddly little angle-iron.
Reply:maybe when you are not hauling cars, you can haul a grader or a bulldozer around.... or maybe a building...Only 1200#?  I would have guessed WAY more then that.  I had a little boat trailer made out of 3x4 rectangular that weighed in at about 2500#.Tim
Reply:So far how much money do you actually have in that trailer?  I figure paint and bolts may be about it so far.Sorry folks, I swear I'm gonna finish this trailer in the next few weeks.  I've just been working a lot of overtime at my regular job.  I've only got around $150 in this trailer so far since I had everything but the coupler, jack and plug.  I still need tires though.  I'm still debating putting a dovetail on it.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
