Here is the unpainted swing out tire carrier/bumper I made for my jeep.  Mostly 3/16" square and rectangle steel tubing, with some 1/4" DOM for the hinge sleeve, 1/4" receiver tube, and 1/2" shackle hangers. This is my first try at linking over to a Flickr.com image.  If these don't show up, they are on flickr.com under James B Brauer (me).  Thanks for checking these out. - James B

Reply:Looks good...what kind of hinge setup are you using?MM175 MIGCutmaster 38 PlasmaCraftsman 30gal compressor4x6 HF bandsaw1hp HF floor drill pressRyobi Cutoff SawAssorted grindersNot enough time
Reply:The hinge uses a piece of 1" round stock in the 1/4" wall 1-1/2" DOM tubing (1" ID).  The round is about a foot long.  There is a shorter piece that is turned down a little bit for an easier fit that works as a large latch pin on the other side.  The pin is center drilled with a piece of 1/4" rod welded in for a handle.
Reply:That's the beauty of welding.  Build it to suit your needs!  I'll bet you can't buy that set-up anywhere.  Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:Niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! I hope to build one of those in the future, I was wondering if you knew about these built hinges http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/pieces/hinge.htmDanMy instructor said someone will catch on fire during class...He wasn't joking!!
Reply:Is this going on a CJ, YJ, TJ, or an XJ? In any case I do hope you have some serious springs in the rear because that thing has got to weigh a ton. I would also think that it will seriously affect your departure angle.Building a Jeep from the ground up as a graduation present for my kid. Reply:Is that a starrett square in your picture?
Reply:Nice work, but what kind of springs do you have on your jeep?  I have several friends that are big time jeep guys, and I built two for a couple of them that didn't weight what that one would, and it sunk the rear end, especially with any kind of trailer hooked to it.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:The rear springs on my '97 TJ are for a 4" lift, and I have adjustable rear shocks to stiffen it up some.  If it sags too much back there I have some 1" spring spacers that should level it out.  I put some gussets and brackets where the bumper mounts to the frame to help take some of the load off the stock stamped mounting bar.  But, this thing is heavy, and sticks way out.  It is more for putting toys (skis, sleds, etc) and groceries back there in the wintertime than serious off-road.  There was enough stock left over after this project to make a simple inverted 'T' shaped tire carrier that I can lift with one hand and use for riding trails.  This smaller tire carrier uses the same 1" hinge and latch pins.  I just about finished it this weekend and will put up some pictures.Last edited by JamesBrauer66; 07-16-2007 at 06:05 PM.
