I forgot may camera at work. Here is a "usual" job I get. I also had to rebuild the unloader on the compressor, but that is another thing.First look at the fine patch jobs done in the past.Next take out the trash. Plasma and a grinder get rid of the "stuff" that was there. Stuff is on the floor. Then make a template.Last edited by David R; 10-16-2007 at 07:29 PM.Real world weldin. Reply:Cut out a new piece to fit, weld in place.Weld UP with .030 wire, 300 ipm, 18 volts AG8 for the big stuff..030 wire, 200 ipm, 17 volts. about 100 amps. Plate is 3/16, sheet is ThinNuttin like NAPA "Spray rubberized undercoating" to make it look old and used. I do this to all frame repairs I do. It will blend in well once it gets dirty and it won't rust. The draw bar is attached directly to the axle so this is only to keep the compressor from bouncing around. Thanks for looking DavidLast edited by David R; 10-16-2007 at 07:20 PM.Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:How much do you charge for smaller repair jobs like that. Up in my area we get about 50 bux an hour with your own business
Reply:I get $60.00 per hour give or take. The whole job was $210.00 I took apart the unloader, replaced a broken roll pin and fixed the drawbar. Probably 1.5 to do the welding part.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:damn them original repairs look like turkey $hit, i've seen better work from trained monkeys lol.
Reply:Holy crap, those old welds look like a dog $hittin' razorblades! That is horrible!Nice job fixing it the RIGHT way David. Looks perfect from here!
Reply:Great fix David. That compressor must have had a bad complex with the other "repair". John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:The person that left those beads is one of my better customers. He picked the machine up today. He thanked me for doing the welding job and getting the compressor operational again. Its a rental unit. You folks have some of his welds before. The rental company used to go to another company for their welding. They had a cube van with the frame shot. The other company chickened out on that job. I took it and made it look decent. Now they are a regular customer. The rental company likes it that I can do welding and mechanic work.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:What no gusset from the pipe to the plate, just busting your *** Dave, looks good.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Just wondering, why did you MIG and not stick weld that
Reply:I mig stuff because its cleaner. The sheet metal on the machine is THIN. I had to hold on the 3/16, jump over to the sheet and right back to the plate or burn through. Mig is faster and easier for me. I stick when I have to. I will measure the sheet tomorrow at work from the scrap pile. Wasn't much to it. Tozzi, no gusset needed. The draw bar is bolted directly to the axle. The piece I replaced just keeps the compressor body from rocking on the axle. I thought about it because I welded around the pipe which could create stress in the wrong place, but.......Got an OLD ford tractor bucket frame and a bobcat rock hound chain tomorrow. Watch for pics. David Last edited by David R; 10-17-2007 at 07:31 PM.Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
