I have a Lincoln Ultrashade Silver Series auto darkening helmet, and it seems to have stopped "darkening" when I weld. Its been hanging up quite a while in a semi dark room, so I am curious if maybe the internal batteries have completely died. I don't know much about these hoods, but I do know the cheap HF auto hood that hangs directly beside it still works without any issues. Any ideas?
Reply:It's a lot easier for you to check the batteries than for me to do it here, and that seems like a reasonable first step. I don't have any idea what type of batteries it has, how to get to them, or if they are rechargeable and charged by a solar cell...but would think that looking at the helmet would answer some of those questions. I also suppose that someone else reading your post eventually will know all about your model, but do you want to wait for that?[Not really trying to give you a hard time but am offering a friendly suggestion that you do the basics or tell why you can't, before asking.]
Reply:I pulled the entire assembly out of the hood, and I really can't find any easy way to access the batteries. I guess its entirely possible they need to be charged, so I left it out in the sun for a little while (until it started raining). Its just funny that the Harbor Freight hood, which cost about a third of the Lincoln, still works fine.
Reply:Some of the hoods use lithium batteries, they have a shelf life of at least 3 years. If the hood sat around for a while after manufacture, could it be that old ?The HarborFreight helmets just have 4 press pins and a bit of glue along the LCD edge holding them together. Attached Images
Reply:I'm not sure how long it sat around before I picked it up, but I have used it before without any problems. In fact, its replaced my HF unit as its a little more comfortable. Well, it had replaced the HF until it stopped working! I just picked up a Hobart hood that takes AAA batteries, so I'm going to give it a try. Guess you can never have too many welders or welding hoods!
