What is the best way to weld/braze mild steel to cast iron?   Have O/A, Mig And Tig.
Reply:Depending on the application I believe I'd braze it. I'm no welder but I've good luck doing that.
Reply:You can try runing nickel rod to the cast first then weld the mild to the nickel with eather stick or migI always tried to work with the oldest hand on the job to gain knowlege but now I can't find any.
Reply:What is the specific application? You'll likely get better advice is people know the pertinent details.
Reply:I am trying to  add fuel injector ports to a rambler intake manifold.
Reply:Hey GabZip,So as to help you & others posting a query, you need to really clarify your project. First, pics are the best to show the physical attributes of the pieces you are working with. Next, it helps to describe your equipment....MIG= max power?, gas/flux?, wire dia.?TIG= power?, rod available?, AC/DC?O/A= tip size?Ok.... from reading your question, I would strongly suggest O/A with Solver-Solder. I use 60/40 & 55/45 w/Lucas-Milhaupt paste flux. You need to clean the joint areas very clean, gently heat to warm, apply the flux, & then heat till sil-sol reaches liquidus. It is quite similar to soft-soldering with f/c lead solder. It would be best to "tin" each piece individually, although you can assemble the parts, flux in position, then heat till the sil-sol melts to fill the joints. It is very easy to do & provides optimum results with steel to cast. It is quite strong, although I wouldn't use that process if heavy pressure or torque is applied. Your project would be easy to do with sil-sol. Practice on a couple pieces of scrap to get the "feel" of controlling the sil-sol puddle which is easily done with the O/A flame. Takes a bit of practice as any new technique. You have to learn flame/heat control on the pieces as sil-sol solidifies quickly, yet can be quickly re-heated to liquidus if necessary. Also, I use .035-.045 wire instead of flat sil-sol..... easier to get into tight/tiny areas for a complete fillet. Hope this helps a bit.....DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab.
